Le Progrès — Restaurant in Épernay

We walked past here the first night in Epernay and this place seemed nice, at 11 it was still full with people. The next day we came back for a drink, it was almost full. There was one spot for 2 and were with 4 people, the table next to us were 2 guys at a table for 4 people and they wanted to move. We asked them if we could take the other table for 2 and this was fine. Only the waiter with the cap didn’t allow this and said we had to sit inside. When I asked why this was the case he was very rude.

Afterwards when we were sitting outside the waiter with the cap was also rude to other guests. Even when you ther waiters came at our table and were very nice, we even saw them looking at the waiter with the cap as if they were scared that he saw them being nice to us.

Very nice terrace, but the one waiter with the cap just ruined the whole evening and the whole experience. All the waiters are very nice only the waiter with the cap is really really rude. If you don’t want to work here, please...

CHECK YOUR BILL CLOSELY BEFORE YOU PAY

The waiters hand written tally is recorded on a paper slip and left on our table. The writing was totally unreadable. At the end of our meal we were asked to go to the bar to pay. An employee behind the bar took the hand scribbled note and entered our items via a computer touch screen. The credit card terminal spit out a non-itemized receipt for 62 euros. An itemized total was never provided as to how they arrived at a total of 62 euros. We had the following menu items;

1-25cl red wine 8 euro

1 - 14cl champagne 8.5 euro

1 - cheese burger 15.7 euro

1- penne carbonera 15.5 euro

1- 1 litre Peeligrino 6.5 euro

The total of these items is 54.2 euro. They over charged us by 8 euro. Their process of not showing itemized total or legible itemization of the items ordered is consistent with typical rip-offs at tourist traps.

Check the cost of your items against the menu before you pay. Unfortunately we didn’t figure this out...

Group of 4 people, in are late 50’s, outside bar fairly busy, walked towards an empty table, stopped and told abruptly no food, had just eaten, so said fine just drinks , no idea I had upset anybody but did comment to members of our group the guy was a little bit aggressive as I had not mentioned food, sat down and ignored for obligatory table service, my wife walked up to a member of staff, he said will serve you when I am ready. She decided best not to mention, waited a while longer, member of staff speaking in French to group next to our table, I said let’s leave and on walking out a female member of our group said our money not good enough, his response was to swear at her, a second member of staff said goodbye while laughing, No idea what we did to upset them.
