La Taverne Moderne — Restaurant in Carcassonne

Three of us went to La Taverne Moderne to eat dinner tonite and had a disastrous meal. Our starters, a green salad and foie gras (8 very thin small slices on toast) were just okay. Then came our main courses, two entrecôtes and a cassoulet for me. The entrecôtes were almost inedible, the meat of very poor quality, ineptly cooked accompanied by limp & oily fries (you would think the French would at least get their fries right…these were most probably reheated). Meantime I sat waiting for my cassoulet which eventually I was told the chef had forgotten! It would take just 10 more minutes. Finally it is brought to me 20 minutes later by which time I had quite lost my appetite & mood. How on earth this place has so many good reviews beats me. I think based on these reviews the place had quite a few in (table of four next to us had a similar incident where one of them had their dessert forgotten.) I would not recommend this restaurant if you’re visiting Carcassone. Your immediate response shows you knew exactly what happened this evening with our dinner. Yes, the meat was terrible and it was hardly eaten by both men. Big quantities of gristle and tough sinew was left on the plates and when we asked where the meat came from we were told first it was from EU but then we insisted where in the EU we were then told it was from Germany which you thought we were from. Actually no, we are not Germans. We are from Netherlands but for you to say it was from Germany because we looked like Germans! You raise the question of money towards the end. Well, we did not once make reference to the prices as we were willing to pay well for a good meal, and for a total of €120.00 without any dessert I think it was...

Truth is we were on our way back up the hill to the cite, but we were so tired from walking all day we stopped here. Food average, much better places to eat and less expensive. We just missed the guitar player who added to the atmosphere. Ordered a Jack Daniels and coke, not sure the Jack was authentic. Limited menu, Rissols starter not bad but proable packet bought from supermarket. Cassoulet greasy and fatty. Restaurant closes at ten o'clock, we finished our main at 9.45 but we were not even asked if we wanted any dessert just coffee, I think they wanted to go home. I would not recommend this place other than the convenience of not going up to the cite or just drinks but make sure you get what you ask for. I always tip for food and or service...

The service at this restaurant was extremely rude. While we were trying to understand the menu and to place an order, the waitress refused to answer any questions or offer any help. We asked her a question and she got annoyed, told us "no" and walked off. I encourage you to not spend your money here. This is a tourist trap. The only reason they make it here is because they are on the main road and that fact simply attracts the most people.

When they read this review they should understand this: quand votre invité ne comprend pas le français, la solution n'est pas de lui crier dessus comme des bâtards
