There are moments in one's dining life when you find yourself staring down at a plate, fork suspended in mid-air, genuinely unsure if what you're witnessing is culinary innovation or a practical joke at your expense. Such was my predicament at 32 Pizza & Bar in Antibes, where on a gloriously sunny Wednesday in February, I encountered what can only be described as pizza with commitment issues.
The Salmone affumicato arrived with all the ceremony of a dish confident in its execution. Yet there it sat – smoked salmon and crème cheese lounging atop a margherita pizza with the nonchalance of late arrivals to a party, making no effort to assimilate with the hot base beneath them. Cold, unapologetically so, as if the kitchen had simply forgotten the fundamental physical property that heat rises.
Was this deliberate? A bold statement from a chef determined to challenge the pizza orthodoxy? Or perhaps a simple miscalculation – the culinary equivalent of turning up to a black-tie event in swimming trunks? I ate it anyway, of course. One doesn't dismiss potential genius without proper investigation.
The Aperol Spritz performed its appointed task with admirable efficiency – that sunset-in-a-glass offering temporary distraction from my tepid topping conundrum. I followed with rosé, because when in the South of France, one must drink pink with the dutiful obligation of a tourist checking items off a list.
Is 32 Pizza & Bar revolutionising Italian cuisine? Probably not. But there's something almost endearing about their cold-topped defiance of convention. In a world of wood-fired conformity and scorching stone ovens, perhaps there's room for this oddly refreshing approach – though I suspect the Neapolitans might consider it grounds for...
Read moreAfter a long day of exploring the beautiful city of Antibes, we decided to sit down for a meal at 32 Pizza & Bar, hoping to end the day on a high note. Unfortunately, the experience was anything but pleasant.
We were initially seated, but then moved to a much smaller and cramped table, which was uncomfortable, especially since we were with our 4-year-old child who was both hungry and thirsty. Despite this, we tried to remain patient.
However, it took 15 minutes just to get empty glasses and utensils placed on our table. We then waited an additional 20 minutes, and no one came to take our order. The lack of attention and service was extremely frustrating, especially with a young child.
While our day in Antibes was wonderful, the experience at this restaurant was a major disappointment. As tourists who are spending money and contributing to the local economy, we found this treatment to be humiliating and disrespectful. I would not recommend this restaurant based on...
Read moreSo we got dinner there yesterday and while the food was okay, we were very disappointed with the service. We had to ask a second time both for our drinks as well as for our food. Apparently they have forgotten and we were promised free dessert for that. Because of that we also ordered two desserts (one for each) but when it came to paying we found out that we only get one dessert for free which feels like trickery to us because if we would have knows that we wouldn't have ordered dessert as we were quite full. So they even made a win of 8€ (the prize for one dessert) for us having to wait longer for our food. That's neither fair nor professional. Can't recommend...
