Great location, lively atmosphere and food looked and was ok. However, the service fell very short of any stars. The waitresses literally ignored us until we insisted on some attention. We ordered in French out of respect and friendliness but we have never felt so awkward! Clearly us English visitors aren’t a priority. Mains came out quickly and we were happy in the spring sunshine but after 49 minutes asking where was the set “cafe gourmands” to follow? , the first waitress said she was new ( fair enough) and didn’t know what the set menu arrangements were, so arranged to ask someone else. No one came to serve the dessert / coffee so I asked again. No response. Nothing arrived. Finally we just went in to pay as we’d had enough of waiting about to get any kind of service. We paid without being offered the dessert and coffee - no discount no offer of service then… we’re rudely told to pay again as their card machine wasn’t working (which it was as the money had been taken) we were then asked to pay again! And told “so it’s your choice to leave” although we wanted our dessert which wasn’t offered! We left pretty disappointed at the service and attitude despite making a friendly effort to speak French and wait nearly two hours for a set menu! Shame … as the moules and steak were good, the cider we enjoyed and the position was lovely. Maybe try looking after your customers and be polite if you want people to recommend or return to eat with you!? Spoilt the...
Read moreI visited last weekend and felt very let down by my experience.
A very disappointing meal in what is otherwise a tremendous city of gourmand restaurants. I opted for one of the "specials" which was muscles served with chips/fries, followed by a chocolate crepe and served with a beer. This package meal totalled around €18 and fell short of expectations. Although the portion of muscles was generous, they were served in a bland and tasteless stock, consisting of little else but cloudy water, boiled raw onion and a hint of indistinct green herbs which did nothing to improve the flavour (or lack thereof). One might expect some bread to be served with the meal, to soak up the juices and help satisfy the appetite — but none appeared! No great loss, as the "gruel" would not only have reduced the appeal of the bread.
To contrast, the chocolate crepe was delicious, warm and moreish. Unfortunately it was not enough to make up for the very poor main course.
This is a well-located business, near to the Gates of the City, and no doubt has significant daily revenues from the scores of tourists who pass by, but I don't imagine that many of the patrons are return customers, unless attending for drinks alone. The drinks selection is good, and includes some local beers (one of which I sampled and enjoyed).
In short, nice ambience, good service, excellent location, and tasty crepes — but don't come expecting a...
