Our last night after two weeks in Normandy and Bretagne before going back to Holland. We had a wonderful time here. We celebrated with the menu Tout Homard at €60 in the restaurant that is recommended as well by Michelin, guide Routard and Gault Millau. It appears they have not visited recently as we were quite unimpressed. Alas!
The chef is renowned, and it does show. The food was good, lobster in several different styles: alive, thermidor and steamed. We had some difficulties getting the meat out of the lobster shell as the 'cuisson' was a little off, but the accompanying dishes were nice.
The winelist shows some old fashioned pricing as no wine can be found under €50, but well..
Our biggest complaint is about the cold, distant and uninterested service. These guys seem to be afraid of foreigners, or they have mental issues. Before, some French waiters were afraid, or just arrogant. But that is years ago. And we speak enough French to be understandable.
No, in this place they will just stand by the wall, deeply disgusted and/or bored, while they wait until you leave. When you ask advice on the huge winelist, they will invariably suggest the most expensive wine. When you ask how to clean the bloody lobster with the inferior tools they hand out (we accidentally even broke the nutcracker) they grunt something and leave asap.
This place is so much out of sync we had to laugh. Arrogance, their nose so high they can't see even themselves... Honfleur has many restaurants, and I'm sure there are much better choices all around. I normally try to be more positive but this time I can only say:...
Read moreThe hardest dinner we ever had. It was a nice dinner with a very good menu until I found a living parasite (worm) in the fish in my main course. Consequently, we should have left the restaurant directly after that but we were overwelmed by the situation. The waiter offered me to get a new dish so I tried the new one and we tried to eat the remaining courses of the menu. At the end the spirit of a nice dinner was destroyed by the worm and we still payed the full price for the menu. In retrospect, we were not consequent enough to leave the restaurant directly but we didn´t wanted to overreact. We would have liked a restaurant in this class to handle the situation differently. Of course parasites can appear in fishes but finding a living! one on your plate is unaccaptable and should be avoided by proper preperation of the fish (freezing...
Read moreDisappointing overall with a few good points. Honfleur is very busy on a Sunday evening in late June, most restaurants full of pre-booked guests we rely on Google Maps and choose the least worst restaurant in a sea of average seafood places. We agreed with most reviews, the food is okay (the almost completely raw vegetables being a low point) but the very slow, surly service spoiled the occasion. Our main courses arrived very quickly (always suspicious) but were overall pretty good, we sat with our empty plates in front of us for over 45 minutes before we were asked about dessert. Dessert was pretty good, again delivered with a scowl though. €90 seemed a lot for the small portions and poor service. We...
