I am so glad my first ever visit to a Vietnamese restaurant was at the Bep Viet MyMy.
My total ignorance of the cuisine and the fact that the menu was in French, in addition to the young lady manning the desk not speaking any English, left me clueless as to where to begin. So I went for a Hail Mary pass (with my forefinger pointing at the menu item), fully bracing myself for a mini adventure - good or otherwise! I landed on their specialty Pho dish.
As the first slurp of the noodly-meaty broth landed on my tongue and palate, my pleasure senses went on an overdrive! Boy, the flavours were otherworldly beautiful, almost magical. Is this the umami salvation that my soul needed?
My struggles to use the chopsticks, broth-spoon and a fork simultaneously to deliver the soupy morsels into my oral cavity did nothing to diminish the joy! The flavours were further amplified by adding hot chilli slices soaked in vinegar. By the time I was finally done, I was sweating all over my head. It felt like I had conquered something. The Hail Mary pass helped me score a perfect goal!
I ventured out from the small cosy restaurant into the waiting coolness of the Parisian night feeling very happy. My first exposure to Vietnamese food was a total success. And I say a big Thank You to Bep Viet MyMy for this...
Read moreA great little restaurant! Although I’m not an experienced Asian food connaisseur, I find the food quite enjoyable. Prices are very reasonable; especially compared to other restaurants in the area.
Service can be a bit slow, in particular at peak hours at lunch, but this is a wonderful, young couple making a go of it; they don’t have the luxury of hiring staff. Living in the same building where the restaurant is located, I observe them working probably 70 hours a week. For those nitpickers (who probably work an “exhausting” French 35-hour week), maybe cut them some slack if your plates are served a bit slower than expected. France definitely needs more hardworking people like this couple! Best of luck with...
Read moreWe’re visiting from Toronto and was craving pho. This is a small shop that didn’t look promising upon arrival. I had doubts about the good reviews but after dining here I can see why. Pho was tasty with lots of coriander and there’s only a makeshift kitchen in the back where they make the food. I think there’s only one guy manning the entire shop too including making the food! Very friendly and nice guy. Always smiling and even though he didn’t know much english, he put in the effort and we were able to understand each other in the end.
I will definitely come back if I’m in the area next time!
P.a. Could use some music by the way, a bit too...
