Cendrillon (Cinderella in English) I am just home from a fantastic dinner at this more than welcome addition to Paris' vibrant eat scene. If Cinderella lost her slipper in some draughty formal palace back in time it could well be here, in this casual modern warm and bustlingly irreverent room, she could well have lost her virginity! If horny was ever an apt description for a restaurant it's appropriate for this Cinderella! The talented founding team all sharpened their knives, tastes and skills at Au Passage and now offers a fine and fun eclectic menu of dishes that straddle some of the world's best cuisines and true excellence. An opening with their signature frozen mescal cocktail blew us away in the best way possible. We shared all dishes so as to savour to the max. A fantastic fish crudo with spicy mayo and the finest allumette potato I've ever seen. Inspired smoked pork sliders with jalapeño and melted cheese are a merited house speciality (one per person was required)! We loved the grilled brisket with its creamy spicy dressing. The idea of a grilled fish head may unadvisedly initially scare some of the faint hearted yet, on the table, is a delicious tactile take on fish tacos. Atypically we forced room for desert! Banana soft-serve ice-cream with a caramelised Guinness reduction was fun and good. The madeleine came hot from the oven with a suave chocolate mousse that served a deep punch of cocoa. Glasses of the italian natural wines they recommended were the perfect accompaniment to an amazing meal. Cendrillon's vibe is casual yet belies the understated finesse of the flavours and talent of its chefs. We held off on the bump of caviar with a vodka shot .. that's a definite next time. Go!

Maybe we caught them on a bad night. To start with the positive, the skewers (nigima/torikama/matsu) were excellent. The initial fish dish and the katsu sando were also good. Our waitress was also very friendly. On the negative side the kitchen seemed to break down a bit after the kaarage dish. That dish was also our least favourite. The chicken felt too wet inside the batter and the combination with the escargots didn t create a nice flavour (in our opinion). After this dish we waited approx. 40 minutes for the duck dish (with our waitress apologising for the long wait). To us the dish then finally seemed overcooked and overly salty. Finally, the terrasse got closed when we wanted to pay and we were ushered inside to do that. That created a bit of chaos around the register. All in all, definitely not our best food experience in Paris.

Cendrillon in Belleville feels a bit like stumbling into an underground party you weren’t invited to — slightly confusing, occasionally overwhelming, but strangely brilliant. The food? Think spice roulette. You believe you’ve figured out a flavour, and then wham — another explosion that defies description. Meanwhile, your taste buds are trying to recover while the soundtrack lurches unapologetically from Dead Kennedys to the Spice Girls. One moment it’s punk-fuelled chaos, the next you’re humming “zig-a-zig-ah” into your curry. In short, Cendrillon isn’t your candlelit, romantic Parisian dinner spot. It’s a gloriously oddball experience — half culinary gamble, half schizophrenic playlist — and somehow, it absolutely works.
