One of the perfect, real french cafes in Strasbourg, France. In July of this year, I made a sentimental visit to Strasbourg, France where I studied as a foreign (United States) student 51 years ago. I was 19 at the time. Now, I am 70. So on my one and only day in Strasbourg, I was in seach of just this kind of cafe. I was disappointed by the crowds around the Cathedrale dep Strasbourg. So, I decided to walk up the Quai from the Chateau de Rohan and have a lengthy lunch at Cafe Brant across the street from the Palais Universitaire. On a sunny morning, I arrived just at the tail end of breakfast service and the kitchen was yet to be serving lunch for 45 minutes. No problem for me. I could see the restaurant was partially full, on the outside terrace and inside with no tourists - and hopefully they did not recognize me as one.
I sat nursing a demi-pichet of Riesling and just enjoyed the open window next to my table inside. The demi-pichet was delivered to my table, and the waiters when they had a chance kept my bread basket full. I placed an order for a chicken with salad just as the lunch menus were being set out onto empty tables. I did not mind waiting the time for the kitchen to open.
This is a proper french cafe. I think other reviewers are mistaken when they criticize the service as slow. In France, they don't hurry you out of a cafe. I really enjoyed my waiters and lunch at this establishement.

Read morewe have traveled many different countries and experienced many different cultures , but i never have experienced such a terrible service as this cafe provided, actually they did not provide any service . they never greet customers as the customers come into the cafe. It seemed that they were busy, however we waited almost 30 min after we arrived and nobody came to our table to ask our order . we went to a waiter directly and told him that we have a baby and we have already waited for 30 min , the baby needs to eat something . but the waiter weared a white shirt , looks like a gentleman but he does not have any reaction . the only reply of this waiter is a cold face without any word or regrets . As a customer we never got any service from this cafe, i viewed many other comments of customers who had the similar bad expereice in this cafe. i just wonder, how could such a bad serivce cafe exist in the center of a world famous tourismus city? shame on you Cafe Brant and...
Read moreVery authentic inexpensive brunch option. We were initially astounded as it took a long time before we realise we had to seat ourselves (we stood like idiots by the door and locked eyes with the wait staffs many times and no one ushered us although there were clearly empty seats) then it took even longer for our table to be attended to later on.
However once the guy came over to check if we were ready, the exchange were pleasant, and service was quick. I see a lot more older people enjoying their coffee and pastries chatting and honestly enjoy the warm calm atmosphere the patrons added despite the place being relatively busy. Croissant, delicious. Coffee, classic, the baugette while nothing to write hime, was fresh and amazing.
Would come again when we are back if not for almost spending close to one hour from standing and waiting at the tavle before we...
