Second visit review, near the end.
Short version: Tuk Tuk might be cheaper, but the Tuk Tuk quality is very very low: ingredient quality, dish taste, service, and overall experience. Kohn Kaen is a little bit more pricier, but ingredients, dishes, service, and experience are all high quality.
I was surprised that a town the size of Evian-les-Bains has two Thai Restaurants. And the two places are one street away from each other. Naturally, I was expecting comparable quality, the difference in price being based on how fancy the location is. After all Kohn Kaen is a larger, much better equipped place, and TukTuk is viewed as a fast food with only a few seats available.
And I was so wrong.
Tuk Tuk offers low quality noodles, with unpleasant taste that don't remind much of Thai cuisine. The noodles are most of the contents of the box: the meat is a few very small pieces, that correspond in color to beef or chicken. Pad Thai? Unlike the noodles which are thin spagetti, these are thin strips of pasta with the same almost rubbery texture and little extra.
On the other hand, Kohn Kaen is a treat. The service is excellent, and the staff speaks very good French. The service is rapid, and the explanations are good. To my surprise, the level of spicy in a recipe can and will be tuned to fit the order, a spectacular difference, as Tuk Tuk offers "what it is", and, if needed the waiting staff can pour you a dose from the same large bottle of pepper sauce I can get in my local supermarket.
At Kohn Kaen there was always someone to ask if everything is okay, to bring a new bottle of fresh water, and when we have left both waiters bid us good bye.
At Kohn Kaen the food is excellent. It is not the best Thai I have eaten, but it's one of the better ones. And the ingredients are good, as much as one can see in the bowl of food: whole leafs, whole mushrooms.
Each time I pass in front of the restaurant, the place is full. And although we were directed to the last table available, people who came in later found no place. So it might be a good idea to make a reservation with Kohn Kaen.
Second visit at Khon Kaen
I was certain the experience at Kohn Kaen can't get any better, yet I was surprised once more by the team running the restaurant.
Yes, they can offer a smaller portion of their excellent fried rice.
Yes, every item in the menu is carefully made on site as ordered. The first time I found out the spicy-ness of the food can be tuned as demanded. Today I found out that the fried rice can and will be fried according to my wishes. A century ago this was the norm. Today, most restaurants just microwave a dish from some Nestle factory and that's it. Not here. Here the food is freshly made and customized.
I am sure to visit the place next time I...

Read moreWe had dinner here on Thursday evening and the restaurant was fully-booked, so I recommend to reserve a table in advance as seems very popular. Their dishes are very authentic Thai taste like I had in Thailand which is difficult to find here countryside in France. Just the price is little more expensive than another similar restaurant but still reasonable because they use beautiful Thai style dishes and good ingredients. Pity we couldn’t try many dishes as we had a late lunch, so next time we’ll surely need to be enough hungry. They have kids menu at 11€, too which have choice for main dish. Also their desserts are very nice. My husband loved his...
