Aida — Restaurant in Baden-Baden

Great food, terrible service. Really want to give 1/5 but no, food was great so 2/5 it is. I came in to get a bite before attending Nézet-Séguin’s first Brahms cycle concert.

I have never had guinea fowl before, so I was interested in trying. Thankfully, food was tasty, and I loved the dessert as well. Unfortunately, the service cancelled out many plusses I had regarding food. Ho boi, where do I even start. In short? If you don’t speak German, are Asian, or are LGBTQ+, I wouldn’t come here.

I was a tourist who just landed in Frankfurt and then came all the way to Baden-Baden. I am not sure what the waiter was thinking, but one thing that’s clear is that he thought everyone coming there must speak German. Clearly tourists like mine are not part of his picture. He was being curt and rude (“well, sit”). I ended up looking up the menu in English online, and pointed what I wanted in the printed menu (which was in German). Well this was kinda fine because I do have certain degree of dysphoria with respect to my voice. Now this is a good time to pivot into the second one.

Then a food was brought, and the second staff somehow decided to trigger my dysphoria by calling me “sir”, despite making gender expression quite clear. I was trying my best not to let that affect my enjoyment of food. Really, I was happy with food, and the chef did a magnificent job. But I was indeed rattled by this. (Considering I am relatively early on in my transition, I may give a benefit of doubt.)

The second incident may have been an honest mistake (or not), but well the third one really isn’t. After I finished my food, someone grabbed the dish pretty fast, but assumed I was Chinese. Without giving me much moment to say I am not, the person said Chinese phrases quickly and took the plate. What kind of racist attitude is this? Funnily, the one who pulled this antics to me was not white either, so take that what you will.

Bottom line: the chef did a wonderful job with the entrée and the dessert. However, the terrible service cancelled all the positives from the food. I know not to let this experience ruin my enjoyment of the concert, and I won’t. But I highly recommend you not come unless you don’t care one bit about the service. Extra no if you are racial minority LGBTQ+. I have another concert to attend on the 10th, and I am very much certain I won’t be eating here, before concert or...

Gestern waren wir seit langer Zeit mal wieder im Aida essen, bisher hatten wir das Restaurant in bester Erinnerung. Dass plötzlich viele Gäste nach der Vorstellung des Festspielhaus ins Restaurant kommen, sollte die Crew eigentlich kennen. Absolutes Chaos bereits bei der Bestellaufnahme, die Restaurantleitung völlig überfordert. Getränke wurden vergessen, kamen erst nach mehreren Aufforderungen. Essen war teilweise kalt, Sossen angetrocknet, lieblos angerichtet oder kam gar nicht. Viele Essen wurden falsch serviert. Das war nicht nur an unserem Tisch, der gesamte Raum Wintergarten hat sich nur noch gewundert. Wenn wir nicht so einen netten Tischkellner gehabt hätten, wären wir sicherlich nicht bis zum Ende geblieben. Er konnte den Schaden nur noch begrenzen. Für diese Preise bekommt man in der Nähe bessere Angebote. Schade, aber da müssen wohl dringend die Prozesse angepasst werden (Bestellungen auf Zettel schreiben, dann in PC übertragen, ist wohl nicht...

Nach telefonischer Auskunft wären am 27.06. (Dirty Dancing) genügend Plätze frei, wenn man gleich 17.30 Uhr da ist. Dort erfuhren wir... Restlos ausgebucht. Der Restaurantchef persönlich hat es doch geschafft uns einen Zisch zu geben. Dafür waren wir sehr dankbar. Die Bedienungen waren ausnahmslos sehr kompetent, freundlich und schnell. Am Tisch war für jeden eine kleine Gebäckstange mit gesalzener Butter vorbereitet, frisch und knackig! Nach dem Aperitif wurden wir mit unserer Speisenauswahl aufs äußerste zufrieden gestellt. Als Vorspeisen hatten wir einmal die Eismeerforelle und Pfifferlingrahmsuppe. Super! Danach hatten wir Beef Entrecote und Seezunge. Beides vortrefflich zubereitet und die Weinempfehlungen waren optimal. Beim nächsten Besuch des Festspielhauses in Baden Baden gehen wir hier garantiert wieder essen.
