Café Belmont — Restaurant in Berlin

The quintessential Berlin Kniepe (neighborhood bar/restaurant). Open 24/7, I stumbled upon Café Belmont when I was struck with hunger at 2:30 in the morning. In no time I had a drink, weißwurst and some delicious potato salad. I then made a point of visiting a few more times during my last visit to Berlin. The food is typical German fare and quite good, a great array of beers and a full bar with a friendly bartender, all reasonably priced. But the real charm is that the Belmont is a magnet for the locals for breakfast, lunch, dinner and through the night - I never found it empty. Hoped to see friendly, chess loving players with manners who welcome players from other countries. There were 2 chess boards, one clock and 2 unwelcoming locals playing chess. The place have Shirov and Kramnik photo on walls, apparently at least one of these great players have been there. I still don't understand if Russian we spoke was the reason, or general attitude that the place doesn't like foreigners were the reason that we felt unwelcomed in this place. The boss was talking on the phone in Greek and smoking a cigarette inside while a guest was having lunch. The selection of food is like at an imbis and the prices are like in a restaurant.
