I’m honestly not sure where to begin. I visited Humble last week and had the best chicken plate in town, thanks to a friend’s recommendation. We both left very satisfied.
Fast forward to tonight, I went back and ordered the “Double Trouble” for myself and a friend who doesn’t eat bread. When I asked if one of the mains could be just chicken, there was resistance. They insisted it had to be either the biscuit, waffle, or sandwich. After some back-and-forth, they finally agreed to give me just the chicken. Feeling bad for the hassle, I ordered two key lime pies and a sauce.
When I got home and opened the meals, the burger was great — loaded with chicken. But the other main was literally a single piece of chicken and two slices of pickle. Was this done out of spite?
I ended up giving my friend some of the chicken from my burger because there wasn’t enough for them. Honestly, we would have been better off just ordering a burger and dismantling it.
The key lime pies were a letdown. In fact, “humble” is the perfect word to describe them — more “key” than “lime,” as in keys you open a door with. They were metal-tasting with condensed milk, lacking lime, meringue, or cream. I’ve made better key lime pies while hungover. Very disappointing.
I also checked out their sandwich shop last week. The thick white bread didn’t let any other flavors shine through. Honestly, they should focus on selling the hot sauce — I ate more of that than the sandwich itself. When I upgraded to a combo that came with chips, I was expecting more than just a packet of Pringles — something I can buy at any Späti.
Stick to the menu and you’ll probably be fine, but avoid deviating, and make sure the cook isn’t involved in your transaction — he was unfriendly, like another stressed-out Berlin Munchies worker. It’s a shame, because I really wanted to like this place.
The worst part was that I thought they overcharged me, but I wasn’t. I realized I tipped them because I felt bad for the inconvenience. A...
Read moreThe stand out was the Chicken Sandwich. I’m not usually a chicken burger kinda gal (despite having tried many), so it’s rare for me to enjoy one this much!
I chose the ‘Berlin’ spice level which was mild and well-balanced. I will definitely come back and try some of the different spice levels.
The downsides for me were the sides. The Mac and Cheese was pretty bland and I wasn’t a fan of their Cornbread. Maybe they’ll be able to improve on the sides since they’ve already nailed the main! It would also be cool to see some of the dishes that I’ve seen on their Instagram make an appearance (although they may already do this on a rotating basis as they have a Specials board).
Service was good, and the staff member that took my order was very friendly and smiley. Space inside was pretty tight, but I appreciate them packing their small spot with lots of seats as I wanted to sit inside to ensure that my food didn’t get cold quickly.
Another thing I noted was how good their extractor fans or ventilation was - I sat right next to their open kitchen and it didn’t smell of fried food in the air at all and didn’t leave my hair smelling funky which sometimes happens in...
Read moreStopped by on a Wednesday afternoon. Around 1 o’clock. It was quite busy. Which I took as a good sign.
I love biscuits. And, I have struggled to find a good biscuit in Europe. I was eager to try their Chicken Biscuit.
I chose the southern style fried chicken. It barely had any flavour. I probably should have gone for the (not spicy) honey-butter flavour or the (moderately spicy) Berlin flavour.
I did not enjoy the biscuit very much. They likely prepared it earlier in the day. And, it was no longer warm. Nor did it have the crisp edges I associate with a good biscuit.
The biscuit was filled generously with a large piece of fried chicken, coleslaw, sliced pickles and a big dollop of sauce.
I also ordered the key lime pie - mainly because I love it and it is rarely available in Europe. It was fine, but not quite like the ones I have had in Florida. I missed the meringue topping. The filling was heavy on the condensed milk and light on the limes. The base had a good flavour, but the texture was uneven.
All in all, it was an interesting lunch. While the flavours did not quite meet my expectations, I appreciated the effort to bring these American...
