I haven’t been here in years, but I was graced by nostalgic whimsy recently and thought back on my time in Prenzlauer Berg when I was at my life’s loneliest.
So inconsolably and impossibly lonely, in fact, that I used to tell people my two best friends in the city were two girls named Betty and Caty. You have to understand, these were Americans I was talking to — they had no idea about the restaurant, I could get away with it! But every time I would come here for my weekly Sunday brunch after I had just told yet another friend or family member an ocean away about my two best friends, I would be awash with sadness. To everyone back home Betty and Caty were flesh and bone, but I knew the truth: Betty and Caty weren’t even figments of my imagination, they were names on a sign. I’d look around the room and see happy families, couples, friends. I’d look into my plate and see the remains of my Eggs Benedict in front of me — the last bits of yolk all smeared and glowing like an idea — interrupted only by an odd tear that rolled out of eye, and maybe an occasional whimper, inaudible to everyone in the room,...
Read moreAfter quite a while of waiting to visit this place for brunch, we were able to get a reservation (by phone) and go. Their menu has many interesting options and we decided on the eggs Benedict and bacon hash browns. Hash browns were amazing, but they are prepared more on the soft side rather than having a crunchy texture. Eggs Benedict were tasty, but I felt they didn’t have anything I couldn’t easily prepare in my house, additionally the eggs were a bit over cooked, as can be seen on the picture. Overall, the portions were on the smallish side compared to similarly priced brunch places. We ordered the affogato and was very good. Service was very kind, as well as the lady receiving people, but they forgot to bring us one of the desserts which we ended up cancelling. Overall a positive experience, food was tasty, it lets you make a reservation and the service is really good, but the servings could be a it bigger. Spent: €70 (3 mains, 3...
Read moreVisited Betty'n Caty with somewhat high expectations based on the positive reviews and the fact that it's a neighborhood hot spot. The quality, amount and plating of the food is in no way justified by their prices. 8,50€ for three scrambled eggs with cheese and supermarket toast (Golden Toast - Körner Harmonie). 6,00€ for a hot glass of OJ. The menu stated that it's a hot juice and it was my fault for missing that but what a fail. There was supposed to be ginger, lemon and muscat in the drink but I didn't taste any. Lastly, the waiter asked that I get up and sit on another chair at the table as I was blocking other tables and the lunch rush was about to start. There was no lunch rush. No one sat at the tables that I was supposedly blocking and if my seat blocks other tables why put a chair there in the first place? All in all not a pleasant visit. Definitely won't be going back again. Zero value for what you pay. Don't fall a victim...
