On a freezing Berlin night, I found myself making a beeline to Rum Trader—a place I’d heard whispers about. It was late, the kind of late when you know you’re either heading for an adventure or heading home. I rang the bell, and sure enough, a guy straight out of Mad Men opens the door. “We’re full tonight,” he says. “I can recommend another spot.” My wife and I exchanged a look, and I said, “I’m here for your rum Old Fashioned. I’ll stand outside in the cold if I have to.” He paused, then led us to a tiny corner inside.
He served up that beautiful Old Fashioned, complete with an ashtray. If you’ve got asthma or an issue with smoke, fair warning—it’s part of the vibe here. The atmosphere is pure old-school—vintage suits, dresses, the whole nine yards. I felt a little out of place in my jeans, but the charm of the place pulled me in. Even the crocodile-skin water jug had a certain elegance to it.
Every time I’m in Berlin, I make it a point to come back. It’s a ritual now, and I don’t plan...
Read moreAs no photos were allowed, I did not take any to share but as long as you don't mind smoking inside a very small bar, I definitely recommend this place.
We stumbled inside pretty much upon closing time but the owners were nice enough to let us in for "one first and last drink", and despite being a way too large group they were hospitable and very patient with some of my already drunk colleagues.
Next time we will call ahead but as a group of 2-4 people you should not find a problem fitting inside, despite how small the bar is.
The cocktails were very delicious, despite being someone who is not fond of rum. They recommended something according to my taste and I was satisfied.
While the drinks were kinda prices, I would still suggest stopping by. The bar had lovely decorations and everything felt like out of a movie. The owners joined in on smalltalk despite our added workload. I hope to come back again, maybe as a smaller group. Don't miss out on...

We walked past the door twice before finding it, so keep your eyes peeled (but that was part of the fun). You knock/ring to get in, and once you're inside your smartphone is forbidden (which is greatly liberating).
The barman asks if you want a gin, rum or champagne cocktail. We stuck with rum, and he asks if you want sweet, sour or fruity. Then, he magics something up. They were all superb!
Very reasonably priced. We weren't asking how much it cost, but the barman started us on cocktails less than €10, before moving us on to more...
