Café Konditorei Wahlen — Restaurant in Cologne

fter taking a walk at a Park by the Rhine we looked for a cozy shelter in city center and decided to have a short stop at this legendary Cafe at the Hohenstaufenring which belongs to Old Town City-Cologne South. I never heard about this institution at all, but my loving Guide did: Here we come, with some thirst and hunger...

After having some thoughts at the Cake Bar, my choice fell on the Baumkuchen Cake (the two Jr. und Sr. Gentlemen got Strawberry & Rapsberry Cakes). The Price of the Cake, Cold n Hot Drinks are very moderate which is IMHO a lot cheaper than Cafe Reichart but also less tastier, prettier and smaller. I'd somehow perfer somewhere more stylish, perfect location and more yummy cakes. :D

So we went here ..with pretty high expectations (cos of all the good reviews). If you've had never went here before, it's pretty hard to "find out" their system to order. U get the drinks when u sit at the table. But for food u need to go to the front. There u get a little paper (ticket) which u have to give to the servers. Then u get the cake. But if you don't know how it all works, you wait a long time to get anything except drinks. Even if you want to to ask the server for the bill, it takes ages (as they run around without looking at anyone). Other than that, the cakes were good (Eissplittertorte). Not as good as expected, but good. They've got a huge menu tho. Coffee was excellent. The style is very old-fashioned, which is pretty nice aswell. Dogs are aloud also, which...

Nostalgia in its purest form. Unfortunately, the quality of the coffee does not match the ambiance at all.

If you’re looking for a cozy spot which makes you feel like re-living a bygone era, this is the place to be. Café Wahlen has all the insignia of a traditional German coffee house. For this experience alone, the place deserves a five-star rating. Price/quality ratio is another thing, though. If you fancy a decent coffee, you won’t find it here. In the end, it comes down to balancing expectations and deciding on how much you are willing to compromise for the experience of time travel.
