Dadan Grill — Restaurant in Freiburg im Breisgau

First time having an unwelcoming experience in Germany. The food was great; I had the döner kebab and it was a tasty lunch.

It may have been a matter of just having the wrong person serve us that made it a unwelcoming time. We did use English to order and that may have been the problem. The guy replied in another language, I think German, so we tried to use the numbers in German on the menu to communicate better. It didn’t seem like we were getting anywhere. Then, he started speaking English and we were able to order. At the same time he was making constant eye contact with a female eating lunch and she seemed to be acting like an audience. She kept staring at us, even after we ordered. When we tried to get a drink in the refrigerator next to her, she was making remarks, repeating, “Oh no, I only speak English” while her friend was laughing.

I don’t want to assume she was really out to hurt us but it didn’t give us a good feeling while ordering our food here.

I’ve learnt Spanish, sign language, and Mandarin, but clearly need to brush up...

Great food but... similar to others who have reviewed, terrible service. My significant other ordered for both of us in German (perfectly, mind you...), and the employee on the line scoffs, turns to his fellow employee and says, “Ugh... Amerikanisch.” Yes, we are from the States, but we’re here in Germany, aren’t we? Furthermore, we paid just like any other customers. It is absolutely unacceptable to treat a customer like that for no good reason. We will now avoid this place any time we come back to Freiburg... there are plenty of establishments here that have treated us...

Auf der Suche nach den besten Dönern Freiburgs, stand der Dadan Grill noch auf meiner Liste.

Der Laden besteht innen aus 2 angenehm eingerichteten, sehr warmen, Etagen. Also wer friert kann sich hier gut aufheizen. Der Grill war zum Zeitpunkt meines Besuches nicht einmal an, aber ich wollte ja eh Döner. Normalerweise soll es Kalb und Hähnchen geben, an diesem Tag drehten sich nur zwei Hähnchenspieße. Wobei nur gut ist… die waren zum einen sehr Massiv, zum anderen sahen sie nicht nach 0815 aus. Auf die Frage ob sie selbst gemacht seien, antwortete der Mitarbeiter zwar mit ja, das kam aber nicht sehr überzeugend an.

Das Brot, ein rundes Fladenbrot mit etwas Sesam, eventuell selbst gemacht, eventuell nicht. Ich tippe auf nicht. Aber: Es war wirklich groß! Frisch nochmal im Ofen aufgebacken, außen knusprig, innen sehr luftig. Etwas zu weit aufgeschnitten hat es trotzdem super gehalten. Ich hatte zwar schon geschmackvollere Fladenbrote, aber das war schon lecker.

Das Gemüse war typisches Standardgemüse ohne Extras, aber sehr frisch. Nur die Tomaten könnten feiner geschnitten sein. Der Kohl hingegen war herausragend gut!

Insgesamt war der Döner erstmal eines: GROß! Für 7€ bekommt man hier was. Das sehr fein geschnittene Hähnchenfleisch war auch in ordentlicher Menge drin. Es war leicht knusprig, saftig und perfekt gewürzt. Nicht zu stark aber präsent. Auch die Zusammenstellung hat gepasst, sodass das Fleisch gut rauskam, aber mit dem Gemüse harmonierte. Lediglich hätte die Sauce direkt ins Brot gekonnt, anstatt einfach obendrüber gegeben zu werden.

Ein wirklich leckerer Döner, der mit einigen Tweeks allerdings nochmal deutlich besser sein könnte.
