❌❌❌We are a diverse family group who gathered in Garmisch. I am Asian and have lived in Germany for over eight years.
While some of my Asian family members were discussing what to eat in their language, the father at the bakery laughed and made a thoughtless joke to his son, saying in German, "Ich spreche kein Thailändisch"
We are not even Thai. I told him we were offended, and that the joke had a racist tone. The son, from a few meters away at the cashier, immediately denied his father said that and insisted he asked where we were from. This was not true, and I know German.
Things quickly escalated. Instead of acknowledging the offensive joke and apologizing, the son "blamed the victim" and asked us to leave the bakery. We had just bought about €26 worth of bread without any issues until the father made his joke.
I don't believe they are truly racist, but the father made an insensitive comment. The son defended him, citing his father's age of 70 years, but there was no apology. We felt it was unfair to be asked to leave for standing up for ourselves.
To make matters worse, some German customers who didn't know the full story sided with the bakery and gave us hostile looks, telling us to leave as well.
In my anger, I used a derogatory term when leaving. A woman followed me, recording on her phone and demanding I repeat what I said. Feeling threatened, I called the police.
It is frightening to speak up and be blamed. I hope our society continues to become more inclusive, and that the younger generation is more aware and sensitive to such issues.
Assuming someone's nationality based solely on their appearance can be considered a form of racial stereotyping. This behavior is problematic because it reduces individuals to racial or ethnic categories based on superficial traits, ignoring their unique identities and experiences. In diverse societies, it's important to approach individuals with respect and avoid making assumptions about their...
Read moreHobi's Backstube is the genesis of all crispy, tasty breads in the township of GaPa. They offer a superb breakfast deal consisting of 2 breads of your choice, tasty cheese, 2 slices of salami, a slice tomato and cucumber, a generous block of butter, jam of your choice or Nutella, and a boiled egg. I submit that this is, incontrovertibly, the best breakfast in town. I wouldn't think for even a second before deciding to nourish myself with Hobi's breads.
Edit: returned the next day for another go - wow. 7 stars.
Edit 2: third return was triply pleasing. 21 stars.
Edit 3: sadly, it's now time to leave Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Visited for the fourth and final time (for now). Unbelievable. ...
