So, for a Valentine's night dinner, my kids wanted Jill's pizza and a movie. Jill's has been our favorite spot for 'za in Hamburg and we always have passed this treasure along to our many visitors over the past few years. We figured Jill's would be busy tonight so we call a bit before 6pm to lock in our 3 pizza order. No luck on the phone so we took our chances with a email order. Luck was in our favor and we got a response that our pizzas would arrive in 65 minutes. Not too bad. Kids had time to get showered and ready for an intro to the Bourne series. So, 7pm rolls around and we get ourselves situated for the movie and our soon to arrive pizzas. The excitement was building and all were proclaiming 'starvation' already. 7:30 rolls up and there is a level of concern. Kids are already asking for snacks and heading into the kitchen. I'm of course shouting to just eat something small because pizza will be here at any moment!...I'm sure of it. Boy, how wrong I was.... I called at 7:30 and got through to my surprise but was told how busy they were and that my pizza was another 30-40 minutes away. (Please note, I only live about a 10 minute drive and they usually always seem to recognize me from my address whenever I call.). I said 'ok but please hurry...' as mayhem was beginning to breakout at the house. Movie already started (without pizza), son already breaking out the apples, my daughter sifting through the Valentine's chocolates, and thankfully my wife suggesting 'perhaps, another beer?' Yes, best wife ever! So, it's now 9pm, no pizza. Both my wife and I are trying to call. After being on home, my wife gets through to inquire about our missing pizzas. After being questioned about the state of our door bell, the location of our house, the reachability of her Handy, we had to assure them that, No, absolutely no delivery attempt had been made. (Please note my previous comment about previous deliveries and the know whereabouts of our house.). We were then given a choice. Not the red pill, blue pill sort of choice but would we still like our pizzas in about 30 minutes. Well, since we had know other options about dinner and I was already wondering how I would end my review if the delivery never came..we went for it and said, 'Yes, we still want our pizza'. At about 9:20pm, our three 'pizzas' arrived. Well, it was more like pizza 'soup'. It seems like they were thrown together and left to 'bake' in the pre-heated travel bag instead of the oven. I've added a photo just for the illustrative effect. What we received was clearly not Jill's best effort. We tried our best to get through them but sadly it was pretty much the worst pizza we've had in a long time. To top it off, my son asked if we can 'just order from Smiley's next time'. Sadly, I had to agree and that is really saying...
Read moreThe short version: This is probably the most disappointing restaurant I've been to in Hamburg, in terms of food, service and management combined. Rude staff, long waiting times for food and drinks.
The long version: I expected this place to be quite upmarket, as when you walk in the door it looks quite modern and hipster. Instead of a kitchen, they have a massive pizza oven and a cramped preparation area, in an open plan design so everyone can see the chefs working elbow to elbow.
My friends and I booked a table for 8 people on a Saturday at 6pm, for a birthday dinner. We arrived one by one and our waitress began taking drinks orders. A few people got theirs within 15 mins, but mine didn't arrive. After waiting I asked another waiter and he said they'd run out of that particular beer, so I ordered a different one instead and he brought it. After having some drinks the waitress told us we had to order food, as our reservation had only a limited amount of time. A few people had gone out to smoke so after rounding them up we ordered our food, and a few more drinks. The drinks didn't arrive, so I went to the bar to double check and the bartender said she'd bring them to us. It still didn't arrive, so a friend of mine decided to go up and talk to the bar. The drinks arrived about 30 mins after ordering them. After 45 mins, our waitress quite rudely told us we only had about 40 mins left on our reservation, despite the fact our food hadn't arrived. We told her we'd been waiting a long time for our food so she went to check. 15 mins later it arrived, a full hour after we'd ordered it. The pizzas were not terrible but quite doughy and a little soggy in the middle. The staff never kicked us off our table, but the whole time we were there, there was a massive queue of people and foodora delivery people out the door. The chefs were making pizza after pizza and handing them to the deliverers. It seemed to me like the restaurant was poorly managed, and that they were prioritising foodora/deliveroo orders over actual restaurant customers, which was why we had to wait so long. I definitely won't be going back to Jill's. There are a bunch of great Italian places in schanze with better food...
Read moreThe quality of pizza has dropped a lot over the past year. In addition to the fact that the recipes do not developed or have been any how changed to a new one over time, the quality of the dishes became way worse (except for the dough more or less, thank God).
About the arrogance of waiters and hostesses and the quality of service, just no comments...
Apparently the pizzeria Jill forgot about what competition is and is not going to progress and improve the quality at all.
I can say this with confidence judging by my last visit. My order included “Trüffelschwein” pizza. When waiter brought it to me I couldn’t find truffle on it, it was not tasted, it was not seen, it was less than 0,1g of truffle in the form of dust. So you can with confidence call it just “schwein” pizza.
If you still want to float on due to old hype about your “pizzeria” try to make research and at least learn what us “truffle pizza” (fyi have a look at “Peppe Pizzeria”, “Anima” location is in Paris) And do not fall face down in the dirt when regular customers are disappointed every time and stop coming to you and recommending you.
Please make 1 page menu of food and 1 page of drinks (make yourself high quality place) God sakes 46 pages of menu????? Am I reading a book or what?!
And what’s wrong with you, girocard and cash, are you living in 19th century??? Especially seeing the faces of your waiters who are half of the day saying to customers: “Yes, we have a shity owner who doesn’t want invest money in the restaurant and sometimes pay taxes, that’s why we use such an old payment services” (consulting approach: use sundayapp)
Hope you will take it serious and at least make some...
