🥢✨ Herr He – Hamburg’s Best Chinese Spot! ✨🥢
After trying most of the famous Asian and Chinese restaurants in Hamburg – from the ultra-traditional to modern fusion – I can confidently say Herr He is the best one in the city. Full disclosure, I am a regular here and went almost 10 times (very rare)
🪑 The Ambience
The restaurant has very high ceilings, an open and spacious layout, and a comfortable, elegant interior. For me, the ability to enjoy a meal without overhearing every table around, in a well-ventilated room where smells don’t stick to your clothes, is a huge plus. The decor is stylish, modern, and culturally themed without being over-the-top. Above all: super clean and very well maintained. The staff are friendly and attentive – we felt welcome from the moment we walked in.
🍜 The Food
Absolutely delicious! There’s a wide variety of dishes and almost everything we tried was extremely well-prepared. You’ll find:
Dim Sum 🥟 Duck 🦆 Noodles 🍜 Spicy chicken 🌶️ And many other authentic Chinese options
The prices are more than fair, especially considering the quality and portion size. This is one of the rare places in Hamburg where you can bring a whole group craving Chinese food and everyone will find something they love.
🍽️ Recommendations 🍽️
✅ Go during lunch! Their Mittagstisch offers unbeatable value. 💡 My go-to: the Duck with Soy Sauce for just €10 – incredible flavor and portion. 🥟 Add a Dim Sum appetizer: either the shrimp dumplings with garlic or the meatballs – both are delicious! 📱 Follow them on Instagram and get a free ice cream!
🚉 Getting There 🚉
📍 Ernst-Merck-Straße 10, 20099 Hamburg Only a 3-minute walk from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, super easy to reach by S-Bahn, U-Bahn, or bus.

Read moreAs my office is right around the corner, my team and I eat here a lot. I’ve probably had lunch here twenty times and have been for dinner a couple times. The food is quite authentic and when here at lunch, you have almost a 50:50 split between Europeans and Asians having lunch. If that is not enough evidence that the food is at least somewhat authentic, I don’t know what is. I find the service to be quick and polite. The food is almost always served hot and yes, sometimes come out of sync with how you ordered it but this to me is also a good sign. The place is always packed and they are doing their best to serve quickly. I can imagine that there will be hiccups here and there and hence some of these bad reviews below. I also don’t care much about the comments regarding decor. It’s simple and functional. I don’t come here for the atmosphere as much as I do for the good food. I actually find it absolutely fine and from a noice perspective, I’ve never felt it louder than other restaurants with a similar size room and height of ceilings. There are also a couple things on the menu that I personally don’t like eating but that is just my taste. I’ve sample so much of the menu and I’d say at least 95% of it has always been to my liking. I’ve been to a bunch of Chinese places throughout Germany and this one is by far the best because it’s the most authentic. Is this Michelin star dining? No! But is it a great place to eat Chinese if you like that style of food…yes! It’s also super convenient to the Hauptbahnhof and even when busy, you can often still score a table so worth...
Read moreGreat restaurant for dimsums and milk tea - my absolute fav in Hamburg. Their location is unbeatable, just 3 minutes walk from Hbf. The restaurant interior is elegant with high ceiling and nice paintings, and it doesn't smell like food. Their WCs are downstairs with steep steps, therefore not recommended for people with mobility difficulties.
The staff is very lovely, helpful and warm. They just updated their menus with photos, such a huge plus! The tables are far away from each other, and they even have an air filter machine.
Their dimsums are generally great, but of course, some are better than others. The steamed rice flour rolls has great texture and nice sauce, but has slight stench of old rice flour. It is a common smell of imported rice flour unfortunately, and to get rid of it takes time, so I can also understand why the rolls smell like that. If you know what I mean, then skip these rice rolls all together.
The interesting-looking nest dimsum is taro dimsum, I find it a bit greasy. Pan-seared buns taste great, but thr dough is a bit mushy at the bottom inside the bun.
Their highlights: • Steamed pork ribs with black bean (finger licking good! Best with some rice!) • Chasiu bao buns (sweet and savory, if you like that jam) • Milk tea (I dream about it daily, but be aware of the high caffeine amount) • Siumai (deeply fragrant with Shitake mushroom) • Chili oil (I need a jar of that).
Overall, my favorite dimsum restaurant for now in Hamburg. Highly...
