German historic “Kaffeekultur” on the Münzplatz

During a stroll through Koblenz I had the chance to invite my brother to a typical “second” breakfast and also give him the chance to experience German Kaffeekultur before lunch: a mix of young people in between classes or on a break from the office, housewives in between shopping stops, pensioners enjoying a leisurely late breakfast while reading the newspaper – on paper attached to long rods ostensibly so that guests don’t take the paper with them.

Our mix of cold cuts, eggs, fresh juice, and Flammkuchen (my non-typical choice of tarte flambée for breakfast) were fine just like the freshly made cappuccino, all served in a light airy café atmosphere with marble tables and high ceiling. It was too chilly to sit outside on the gray cool January Monday, but it was nice for me to compare the dining area with what I could remember from years before when the food was Chinese and the interior design was very different. As I learned from the Café’s own website, there was a café named Kaffeewirtschaft on the same spot a century earlier, so my spontaneous invitation for my brother to try German Kaffeekultur was actually historically accurate. Although comparing the café to paradise (the street location is Paradies 1), as the cute and informative menu does, might be a bit exaggerated, we enjoyed...

An old cafe, since 1911 (?) which is pretty young in Europe (right? Smile … one of the comments I hear all the time is … 200 years in US considers ‘old’ … you go to let them win something sometimes … all good naturally), in the Munzplatz - public square.

All around constructions make it hard to enjoy outdoor. But it’s a cool morning to watch the city waking up and go about. It’s 10:30, not really early but the city feels still asleep.

Wir waren an einem Samstag Vormittag in der Kaffeewirtschaft, da unser Lieblingscafé voll war. Da es leider an veganen Alternativen mangelt (keinerlei Milchalternativen, nur lactosefrei) und ich nicht einsehe für einen Tee über 4€ zu bezahlen, blieb es bei Kaffee schwarz, meine Begleitung bestellte den Indian Chai, der in der Karte mit Milch ausgeschrieben ist. Es kam nur heißes Wasser mit einem Teebeutel. Um eine Kellnerin auf sich aufmerksam zu machen, muss man schon fast einen Hampelmann machen um der Dame zu erklären, man habe den Chai mit Milch erwartet. Man erklärte uns, man könne Milch bekommen, aber i.d.R. gäbe es den nur mit Wasser. Dann sollte man das mit der Milch vielleicht aus der Karte streichen und angeben, dass es sich hier nur um einen Tee handelt. Die Kellnerin war zudem recht unfreundlich und in 2 Stunden kam auch niemand mehr an unseren Tisch, um nach weiteren Bestellungen zu fragen. Beim bezahlen wollte ich aufgrund der nicht besonders ganstfreundlichen Behandlung auch kein Trinkgeld geben, da ich es jedoch nicht passend hatte, legte ich 10ct zu viel hin, die ich nicht wiederbekam, obwohl ich nicht angab, ein Trinkgeld zu geben. Das gab sich die Kellnerin dann einfach selbst. Es geht mir nicht um 10ct, nur allein um die Tatsache, dass es anscheinend als selbstverständlich angesehen wird, solche "geringen Beträge" nicht mehr rausgeben zu müssen. Wir wollten einfach nur noch weg und daher bestand ich nicht mehr auf das Rückgeld, worüber ich mich im Nachhinein auch ärgere. Das war definitiv unser...
