Found this place on one of our last days in Munich and it was like manna from heaven! For an American with a penchant for hoppy beers, I had nearly had my fill of sweet lagers and was dying for a hop forward ale. This place delivered in spades! I immediately gravitated to the double IPA and it was easily the best beer I had during my entire visit to Europe. We also ordered the cheese platter and it was way over generous in portion given what we paid. And the cheese was awesome! That is one thing I wish we could bring with us from Germany, the amazing variety of fresh and delicious cheeses that I just can't seem to replicate in the states! Paul and Jen were delightful and made pleasant conversation with us and I was definitely intrigued by their story and totally rooting for their success! I had intended to go back on our last day in Munich to get another round of their tasty beers and to buy a t-shirt but it just never came to pass. Now, nearly a year later, we're about to embark on another trip to Munich and I am finally getting around to the review I had raved about posting immediately upon returning to the US. If you're an American expat looking for a hoppy taste of home in Munich, this is your place! If you are a local who is curious to taste the spectrum of what American beer could be (and the various international flavors Higgins also regularly brews), I couldn't recommend a location more strongly than this one. I look forward to returning to see what Higgins Ale Works has cooked up since...
Read moreHiggins Ale Works is a craft beer lovers home away from home. Being from Michigan, a state that has hundreds of microbreweries, and having visited dozens throughout the state (and many others around the US), my wife and I and a gaggle of family members wanted to try out this brewery while in Munich. We were all here for Oktoberfest (Wiesn) so we were preparing to drink many festbiers, along with German style beers (helles, marzens, dunkels and Hefeweizens) during our stay.
German beers are good, and the freshness of the festbiers at Wiesn is undeniable. However, in a city, state and country that takes pride in their styles of beer, there are not too many places that caters to a craft beer lover. But it was our goal to find a great tasting pale ale in Munich. And Higgins Ale Works did not disappoint! We tried just about all their offering during the two times we visited and they were all very good.
We met the owners, Paul and Jen and they were friendly and gracious hosts. The servers we met were also very nice. Locals and travelers we met were friendly with a smile and a “hallo”.
We would highly recommend any craft beer maven, aficionado, fan to stop by Higgins Ale Works while visiting Munich. You will be happy that you did. It’s a small, laid back tap room that makes you feel like being back home at your own favorite local microbrewery.
There’s something to be said in doing your craft well in a small scale so you know the passion in making a good product is there. I’m Tom Perez and I endorse...
Read moreWe took part in a craft beer tasting (tasting was done in English, making it an even more authentic experience) - two things should be emphasized. Selection of beer: We had 6 different beers fresh from the tap. In my opinion, a great number to try out without being overwhelming. Each of the 6 beers is characteristic in its own way and always comes with its own flavor (and sometimes even with a nice story about the idea behind the beer) The tasting: It's not a normal tasting where you are simply guided through a selection of beers… it's a tasting where you get a deep insight into the process and the people behind the beer. Paul's explanations show the passion he puts into his beers. With his way to explain and answer questions he perfectly addresses a broad range of people – nevertheless if you are a newbie or a dedicated craft beer expert you will learn something new. The food that was prepared in the middle of the tasting was not only delicious but also carefully selected and was a perfect match to the beer! In addition to the tasting, we had a tour through the brewery (directly in the neighboring building) where we had the possibility to try two additional beers (one directly from the boiler). The tour once showed again the passion and craftsmanship that goes into making the beers! A successful evening all round! I would highly recommend the event to everybody that is into...
