Swabian cuisine is one of southern Germany’s most beloved food traditions. Known for its handmade pasta, rich flavours and rustic heart, it is a cuisine rooted in comfort. For vegetarians, it can sometimes feel like a world built around meat. But at Herr Kächele in Stuttgart, that world opens up with generosity and warmth. This is a place where Swabian food is reimagined without losing its soul, offering clean, nourishing dishes that stay true to tradition while welcoming everyone to the table. I ordered the vegan Maultaschen plate, and it was a quiet celebration of textures and flavours. The Maultasche was filled with lentils and herbs, topped with slow-cooked onions and served alongside creamy stewed lentils, pillowy Spätzle, golden potato salad, crisp cucumber slices and fresh field greens in a light dressing. Everything tasted balanced and thoughtful, hearty without being heavy, satisfying but never too much. Each bite felt like it had been prepared with care, and nothing felt rushed or overdone. What made the experience even more special was how clearly loved this place is by the people who live here. Throughout lunch, a steady flow of locals came in. Many picked up fresh Maultaschen from the shelves at the front of the shop, ready to take home for dinner. Others sat down at the wooden benches, chatting quietly over trays of food. There were far more locals than tourists, and that gave the space a calm, everyday beauty. You could feel that this food is part of the city’s rhythm. Herr Kächele is tucked just off Königstraße, on Schulstraße, a few minutes’ walk from Schlossplatz and close to Stadtmitte station. The Markthalle is nearby too. After lunch I wandered through and picked up fresh white asparagus and sweet strawberries, still sun-warm and fragrant. It was the perfect follow-up to a meal that already felt rooted in the season and the region. The space is small but warm, with black walls, handwritten menus, and copper lamps hanging over wooden tables. Vegetarian and vegan options are clearly marked, and takeaway packs of Maultaschen and Spätzle make it easy to bring the experience home or back to your hotel. The staff were kind and happy to let me try a mix of things. Prices are fair, the food comes quickly, and it feels honest in every way. If you are a vegetarian or simply someone looking for a healthier, more inclusive way to taste southern Germany, this little place is a gift. Herr Kächele shows that Swabian cuisine has room for everyone. It is food made with respect, offered with pride, and remembered long after the plate is cleared.

vegan and vegetarian options for swabish food staples, maultaschen and spätzle. i went here twice so far. once before closing, and once during lunch. predictably, lunch crowd line can get long. but service is fast, even though it's just one person doing all the work. seating can get limited. there's an outdoor area with stools and standing tables that, but those couls get quite full too and definitely not ideal with bad weather. so would definitely prefer to go here without the crowd though. food was good. i had the vegan maultaschen with potatoes once, then the vegetarian lentils with spätzle. potatoes had nice zest to complement the hefty maultaschen. lentils with spätzle had nice texture variation. generous servings. one order of any dish could easily serve two. tasty, for sure. but a food coma risk with all the carbs and the serving size. takeout is key. important to note: you can pay with card.

I really liked this place. Having never tried Maultaschen before, I’m sure I could have gone to a more high end establishment and had better quality ones, but for my purposes, this was just fine. It was more of a fast food type where you order at the front, pay and then sit down with the food when it’s ready. I think it’s kind of like a dumpling of some sorts but it was really good. Served with fried onions and a hot potato salad made for a hearty German Swabian meal. Also located on a busy little walking street in Stuttgart.
