Disclaimer: I'm very familiar with tipping culture, but thought that only in the US was it sort of mandatory. I read about tipping culture in Germany and understood that giving it is purely at the customer's discretion - and for good service. In short, tipping is welcome but not expected.
Food and service at this Vietnamese restaurant was decent. The service was especially NOT EXCEPTIONAL, JUST STANDARD.
All was well until it came to paying the bill. Our bill came up to €46.30; we opted to pay in cash and gave the server a €50 note and €0.30. Without a second thought, he wanted to take our money without wanting to give back change, until I indicated that I was waiting for my €4 change.
Pethaps I put him in an awkward situation, because he came back with his wallet and asked if I could help him break a €5 note. We didn't have a spare €1 so we started at each other awkwardly until I decided to give it up and told him to keep the change. He didn't even bother to try another way to give us the change.
If you couldn't tell already, he had no intention of giving me back my change and made things difficult when I asked for it. Such an act is dishonest and downright scummy. I had a good time eating there until the tip situation happened. This was a proper sit down restaurant near the main high street of Stuttgart, not a tiny roadside vendor, so I'm sure there were other ways for this guy to source €4.
I haven't felt this cheated on a trip since I visited -- funnily enough (or maybe not) -- Vietnam. I put those bad memories behind me until this Vietnamese immigrant in Germany brought them up again with his scummy way of pocketing my change. Reminder: THE SERVICE WAS JUST OK, NOTHING EXCEPTIONAL.
For the server and whoever runs the restaurant, I pray that you don't sleep well at night knowing you did something very scummy for a tip. I hope you find that...
Read moreVisiting Chochin 1982 Vietnamese Restaurant in Stuttgart was an absolute culinary delight. The moment you step in, you're met with the inviting aroma that promises a tantalizing journey for your taste buds.
The star of the show for me was undoubtedly the Pho. It was a beautiful symphony of flavors - the broth was rich and aromatic, clearly simmered for hours to achieve that perfect depth of taste. The quality of the ingredients spoke for themselves. From the tender slices of meat to the fresh herbs sprinkled on top, every component seemed hand-picked for its role in the dish. It wasn't just the taste, but the texture too, that made this Pho stand out. The noodles were perfectly cooked, neither too soft nor too hard, and provided the right amount of chewiness to the dish.
Now, let's talk about the portion sizes. If you're coming to Chochin with an appetite, you're in for a treat. The portions are nothing short of enormous! It's heartening to find a place that doesn't skimp on quantity while maintaining such high quality. It's a great value for your money, especially when you consider the sheer volume and quality of the food you're getting.
The servers at Chochin deserve a special mention. They were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Regardless of whether you're a regular or a first-timer, they treat you with the same warmth and attentiveness, ensuring that you have a seamless dining experience.
In conclusion, if you're in Stuttgart and have a craving for a healthy, hearty, and delicious bowl of Pho, Chochin Vietnamese Restaurant should be at the top of your list. The combination of the delectable dishes, the attentive staff, and the cozy ambiance makes it a must-visit spot...
Read moreProbably the most racist behaviour I have ever experienced at a restaurant in all of my travels abroad ! I was quite shocked at how rude the male waiter was towards non Caucasians.
Firstly, there was no acknowledgement when I was trying to get his attention a few times for placing an order. And when he did come over to my table, he had a rude and disgruntled attitude. While waiting for my order, I was checking my phone msgs like every other person on this planet does in a restaurant. He walked over to my table again and had the audacity to tell me that I should not click pictures of the restaurant when I was just scrolling thru my phone. Hello !?! That place has NOTHING to rave about and take pictures of - it's dark, cramped and musty for god's sake ! And the final straw - when I took a sip of water from my own bottle while leaving, he again came trotting and said I can't have "outside drinks" !?! And when I asked him why he didn't serve me water like he did for the other guests, his only response was "sorry, not allowed". At this point, his blatant aggression and stupidity was just not worth my while to call him out for his actions.
So long story short, if you are a person of colour, avoid this place like...
