Bäckerbrunnen „Die Altstadtkneipe“ — Restaurant in Wiesbaden

Of all the various places in Wiesbaden to have a traditional schnitzel meal, you really need to make your way to this fine establishment. When the weather is nice outside they have great seasonal seating, but the best is when it’s a little brisk and you go inside. Very cozy and welcoming atmosphere with a clean and comfortable seating areas that are divided into quiet cozy spaces. Now, for the food…WUNDERBAR!!! My schnitzel portion would easily feed a family of 3. The breading is superb and the gravy & mushrooms were well seasoned and not bland. The fried potatoes had a nice seasoning on them and the French fries were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of salt. What a disappointment. I lived in Wiesbaden for about 15 years. This was a regular of mine because of the reliable quality of its food and atmosphere. Left WI 4 years ago and returned this week for a holiday. Headed straight for the Bāckerbrunnen and found out that it had literally just reopened after 9 months closure. Ordered the Tafelspitz with grüne Soße and potatoes. The Tafelspitz was so overcooked, dry and chewy. The (very few) boiled potatoes were tiny, old and very spongy. I really hope this was just a sign of recently reopening and getting back into the swing of things.

On a positive note, the service was great: quick, friendly and responsive.

We arrived at 815 pm and sat at a smaller booth in the corner by the front. The atmosphere was quaint and quiet on a Sunday. The bartender and server were both friendly and spoke english. We had a variety of drinks and he took the time to understand my specific drink and food requests. They ran out of spaetzle, I understand with it being late but he suggested mashed potatoes instead. I am happy he did they were amazing and flavorful. We both thought all of the food was delicious. We finished with double espressos. They came with a nice crema on top, sugar and a cookie. We closed our ticket so our server could leave and sat for a bit. The bartender took over servicing tables. We very much enjoyed our whole experience the whole hour and a half...
