In my opinion, Valtisa rates highly in terms of authenticity, uniqueness, off the beaten pathness, deliciousness, and artistic flair!
By the first two, I'm referring to their menu: it's Cretan based and inspired Cuisine, which I think is quite challenging to find so close to the center. By the second I mean that Valtisa is in a secluded area that you would likely not venture to if you stayed in the Center. It's in Petralona, a working class neighborhood close to the center. I had a delicious Cretan Pie with fennel and a succulent Cretan lamb sausage. I plan to come back and sample the rest of the menu. I think Valtisa means suit case in Greek because the place is decorated with many many old school suitcases 😍; quite creative.
I was welcomed very warmly and told they have a super cool open air roof top, which is totally not obvious from outside! I definitely plan to come back and sample the rest of the...
Read moreAmazing greek food for a price you won't find anywhere remotely close to Athens. It has a homemade feeling to it. You can also find some specialities from crete on the menu. Though low in price, 1-2 dishes per person are enough, so rather visit with some family or friends and share the food if you want to try many dishes. My favourite is the fresh, still warm fava bean spread. The waiter and waitress are nice and helpful when you have questions, they even speak English very well. We received some raki as an aperitif and delicious sweets after dinner for free, what a generous surprise! Just be warned that the wines are extremely dry and sour, if you don't like that, please just try the cider (very sweet), some beer (alfa weiss is very mild yet flavourful), one of the traditional liquors or one of the amazing ouzos (can be mixed with water on ice) from the...
Read morethis authentic greek tavern / restaurant is one of the best near Acropolis (the other side, not the center one). the staff and service is very nice, food comes fast and it’s soooo good, I highly recommend! we went the first time a week ago (when i took these photos), and came back last night with some friends! they also have a rooftop terrace that we just found out of, but they said the reservation has to be made at least 2 days prior due to always being fully booked upstairs. other than that, there is room inside (with AC and greek music - not live) and also downstairs just outside the restaurant. it is a chill and pleasant environment (not like those extremely loud places in Plaka), where you can enjoy some GREAT greek food (grill, seafood, salads and a wide range of appetizers, also their wine and tsipouro...
