This is my second time in Halkidiki and the third holiday in Greece. We try to go to a different beach every day ( in a range of maximum 1h drive) and to eat a main meal every day in a new restaurant. So, the day arrived for Afytos. Nice city, the pedestrian downtown has nice traditional houses, mostly from the1900th. A bit too commercial fot my taste, even if most of the signs are only in Greek. M. choose the restaurant based on some other reviews saying that the portions are huge. And that will be an issue... in some countries the law impose to have in the menu the quantities, so you know in advance how big is a portion. For instance in Romania and Bulgaria a soup is 300/350 grames! Can you have a second dish of another 300/350 grames the same lunch!? I don't... Back to Greece, there is no indication in the menu about quantity per dish. As in Germany or in the US... so, sometimes you are pleasantly surprised, sometimes not. In Stroboulis the portions are big, probably around 400 grames, so yes, you can even have a portion for two. The terrace is big, but that means also the chance to sit next to a joyful group of loud Greeks... it happened to us. They were 12 at a table, so goodbye to our waiter for 20 minutes... on the other hand we' ve got "on the house" ice cream and fruits (real small portions...) We had pasta&shrimp, pasta napoletana, mix fish, tarama salad (too oily), courgettes, dolmades, etc. The only positive mention goes to the mussels from the mix fish. Fresh, I felt the savory of the sea! Great sauce. To be repeated (sometime). The house wine, white, flat, to be avoided. Waiters speak a good English. When the terrace is full, they get to busy, than...
Read moreI’m writing this review at the end of our week-long vacation in Greece, now that I have some experience with dining at Greek restaurants.
This was the best dining experience I’ve had in a long while. Never knew a meal could give you this much happiness.
We went in without a reservation and were offered a table after only a 10-minute wait.
They do their own version of the fried feta with honey, with very thin dough wrapping the feta, drowned in a lot of warm honey. This was not only the best version of this dish that I’ve tried (I ordered it at 5 different restaurants), but I think it is the ultimate cheese appetizer ever made anywhere. It’s a must try if you love cheese.
The tarama (called fish roe dip in their menu) was the best I had among the ones I tried in 4 different restaurants. Highly recommended.
500 ml of their house wine is only €6.5, which is extremely good value, and it’s tasty too.
We also had marinated anchovies, fried squids, and octopus carpaccio—all of them were delicious and each came in big portions. My least favorite was the anchovies since it was too salty for me.
As for the ambiance, I think the music could be a little louder and they could close the sunshade which looks a bit low quality—but otherwise great atmosphere.
We are definitely coming...
Read moreStroubolis is a family business in the beautiful Afytos, Greece. Therefore, the young management team and the staff are working hard to preserve the spirit of the restaurant as it was enheritated from the founders of this place. The restaurant looks, smells and feels like Greece. The decorations are beautiful and they make a great ambiance. During our last vacation în Greece we had lunch and dinner several times at Stroubolis. Food îs simple, traditional and the plating is great. The prices might be a little bit higher than other restaurants in Afytos but you get far superior quality for what you pay. Besides all of the above, what brought us back to Stroubolis was the hard work, dedication, love and care the staff put it to make every client feel important and well served and their efforts to preserve the spirit of the business. Therefore, I would highly recommend Stroubolis if you are in the area. Thank you Kleantis, thank you Harris and all of the team for making our evenings as unforgetable events. Wish you all the best and we would surely come back. Kirios Kostas...
