Philipos Taverna — Restaurant in Municipality of Chersonissos

Was so looking forward to eating here. Didn't realise we would have to book as when we arrived they asked if we were booked we said no and they said all tables were reserved. We said nevermind we would go elsewhere and a waiter suddenly made a table available but the other waiter wasn't happy about that and,we could sense the hostility. We said again we would leave but the little waiter said we were ok. We were given menus and chose our starters and main courses. My Partner had squid and I had garlic mushrooms. Squid was bland and my mushrooms weren't too bad. Halfway through our starters our main courses appeared. We said we hadn't finished but they were put down anyway. We had the feeling we were being rushed and it put us off our main courses. We didn't eat it all and felt we wanted to leave. We asked for the bill and the little waiter asked if we were paying cash or card. We said card and he brought the bill made out in cash. He got a bit agitated as he said he had worked it out as a cash payment. We said we told him card. After waiting a few minutes while he altered everything we paid by card. First time at Philipos, we were excited to eat here as the review score is so high. After a week of beautiful Greek food we fancied something naughty so I opted for a carbonara and my partner had the spaghetti bolognese. Waitress asked if I wanted mushrooms to which I said yes. When the food came I asked the waiter if he had a pepper grinder as I like my pepper fresh and coarse, he shrugged at the powdered pepper on the table as if I was being fussy. Oh well. Shame because it needed something. Both dishes were very bland, mine tasted like it had hardly any seasoning and was just cream, bacon or lardons, mushrooms and pasta. Partner's spaghetti was not very rich, just meat and a thin tomato sauce. No extra cheese offered, the carbonara didn't taste like it had any cheese in it at all. The waiters also had a spat about something which made it less welcoming. We savour every meal in Greece but we couldn't get out of here fast enough, easily our least favourite meal and experience of...

Firstly to correct a review I saw.....where it was posted on a review that they push water melon and raki absolutely rubbish ..this is free its part of the traditional crete hospitality. Phillipos and his family are a wonderful genuine family . Nothing is to much trouble. I can not fault this taverna at all. When you go there be prepared that you are visiting a traditional taverna your not rushed out and your money just taken. Also some things are to be pre ordered but this is because its done fresh and not out of a pack . Definitely will going back time and time again. It spotless clean and warm and welcoming.
