Zachos — Restaurant in Municipality of Chersonissos

If you’re vegetarian like me, there’s way better restaurants in the area. We took the vegetarian mezze, as suggested by the waiter. The staff at the restaurant is very helpful, maybe a bit on the pushy side, but that’s expected in the most popular square of a touristy place like Hersonissos village. What made the dishes average quality, was the non freshness of the ingredients. Even the basics, such as the French fries, or the garlic bread, were stale and taste like they had been reheated, rather than prepared fresh for us. Only dish we found ok was the only one we didn’t order, it was on the house (nice gesture): cheesecake, which is not Greek anyway. Can't say it's bad food - quality was alright. However, compared to the tavern Harakas on other side of the road it's not worth money or time.

There was no welcome snack or dessert on the house, the waiter seemed to be in a rush to have us seated and afterwards to go.

Menu is tailored for international tourists, not really tavern style.

Ordered the ice cream tower dessert - most of the picture was cream in disguise, ant the ice cream itself was the pink/brown/white type from common supermarkets - underwhelming. Portions are on the smaller side as well (but not too small to complain).

What can you say when you've been to a place that seems surreal in its first impressions. It must be a dream. Only gradually did we realise that this is not a kitschy film set, the people are really delightful. In addition, we experienced very very good recommendations, crispy fresh food, great wines and more than fair prices (inside tip the fried courgette as a starter, you very very rarely get them so finely spiced and seasoned). Besides classic starters we had incredibly tasty chicken and a pork belly steak which is second to none. If you have the opportunity to sit on the roof terrace and enjoy the wonderful sunset in summer, you will know why it is so popular and in demand...
