The food here is delicious. Its a must visit in Palaiohora and if the service was equal to what the owner provides, it would have been an absolute splendour.
On our 2nd visit to the establishment we've been told from a waitress to wait about 10 minutes and wait for the first table to be released. We did so and as soon as a party left we proceeded and occupied the table.
At that point another waiter came up to let us know that the table was "reserved" (even though there was no indication of a reservation) and that the waitress had misled us.
To be absolutely clear, being told to get up once you sat on a table which does not have a reservation sign is considered an insult in Greece, needless to say in Crete. If you add into the mix the fact we had 2 minors with us, a toddler and a newborn this
The problem with El Greco in this case is a mix of inexperienced personnel and a "I was not meant for this / elitist" attitude that engulfs the younger generation of waiters in Greece. In that sense a lot of the character of hospitality you would experience by someone really loving their job and typical or Greece (and Crete) is not here which will eventually affect the Greek tourism industry if not averted by other means (i.e. proper personnel training ahead of the season etc.).
I thought very carefully about this and after speaking to the owners sister on their nearby establishment Oddysey I can only conclude that it would be lessen of me to indicate this is a bad place to visit just because my second visit resulted in our stepping up and leaving the establishment.
So... this is a great place to have food and is worth the wait but be aware the personnel here is inexperienced and this may affect...
Read moreExcellent new restaurant in Palaichora run by Michalis, who has branched out from his family's very successful restaurant, the Odysseia. A wonderful combination of old and new: the pizzas are what we have come to know and love at the Oydsseia, whilst the new dishes are interesting and arguably positions the restaurant at a slightly higher quality and price point (but not too far!) to present an attractive new option for diners. This is complimented by the lovely, stylish terrace seating arrangements on the first floor, affording a combination of unbeatable views and (often) warm, gentle, mediterranean breeze that you won't find at any other restaurant. Combined with a friendly and attentive group of waiters, including Michalis himself, your culinary needs will be looked after in an exemplary fashion. I should add that the complimentary desert with the bill (chocolate moose/creme brulee) also adds a nice, sweet, twist (with Raki of course!). The menu is perhaps a little shorter than some other places, probably given the recency of the restaurant's opening, but the choice is quite diverse and each dish has been carefully selected so that quality is not compromised. Overall, this is one of the very best restaurants in Palaichora and a...
Read moreThis is not just a pizzeria. The appetizers on offer here rival those of any restaurant in paleochora and the complementary homemade bread is the best we had in this town. The pizza's themselves are good and large. If you do as we recommend and have some of the appetizers, our advice is to share a pizza with two. The first time we went here we bit off more than we could chew with two pizza's and appetizers. The owner is a modest and very kind man, and made sure we could take home our leftovers. When we came back for a second time, we ordered one pizza and four appetizers for the two of us and this was perfect! If we go solely by the quality of the food this restaurant is on our top two of stay in paleochora, if we take into account the costs as well it has no competition. If we are returning to Pleochora, El Greco will be first...
