AVATON 1739 - Coffee & Wine Roof — Restaurant in Municipality of Naxos and the Lesser Cyclades

Popular place, there are signs advertising it all over town. We came here for a drink and an appetizer and to enjoy the view of the sunset. It’s definitely a nice view from the rooftop but a building blocks the view of the direct sun setting.

I got an espresso martini, they make theirs with rum and mastiha which I found interesting. I actually didn’t like it, despite noticing so many people getting them at the restaurant. It wasn’t strong or flavorful enough of coffee or booze, it was just eh. My boyfriend got the tangerine sorbetto which was actually really good and not too sweet. We got the beef tartare as an appetizer. It’s such a small portion and overpriced for what you get, not worth it. The staff also so confidently tell you the wrong thing, when serving the dish to us they said it was topped with cheese, which was an issue to us because we’re lactose intolerant. We also thought it was weird that it would be topped with cheese bc tartare never is. We confirmed looking at the menu that it was likely egg yolk powder and someone else confirmed that for us, it just looked like cheese. We didn’t like how the staff just so easily told us the wrong thing. Our waitress proceeded to think there was an issue because it was topped with mayo and egg, even though neither contains lactose, so we had to explain that to her. She kept saying we have to tell her if we have any food allergies even though she never asked. And beef tartare never is an issue to us. She took forever in bringing us the check, we asked for it and she definitely forgot, we had to go up to the main hostess who then redirected us back to our waitress.

The dishes we tried, including the charcuterie board, chickpea salad, the meat, and fried bites, were absolutely mouth-watering, showcasing the variety and attention to detail that the restaurant is known for. I’d like to share a very disappointing experience I had with this café, and unfortunately, I can’t recommend it. The staff came across as unreliable and unwilling to assist a customer in a very simple situation.

On Wednesday, 20/08, I visited the café around 9 in the morning. As I was leaving, I accidentally left my bag behind. Fifteen minutes later, I called and explained exactly which table and chair I had been sitting at. The woman on the phone put me on hold to check. She came back and said nothing had been found. I left my phone number in case it turned up.

About twenty minutes later, I decided to go back in person. When I arrived, I found four staff members sitting near the tables, smoking. They told me they had been informed and had checked, but the bag wasn’t there.

Worth noting: from the time I arrived until the time I returned, the café was almost empty — maybe two or three other groups. It was a slow morning and not busy at all, so it should have been easy to check thoroughly.

Despite their reassurances, I decided to look myself — and found my bag, open, on the exact same chair I had described to them earlier. It had been sitting there for over 40 minutes.

I was honestly shocked and deeply disappointed. I had trusted the staff to help me with something very simple, and they not only failed to do so but also insisted the bag wasn’t there when it clearly was. I kept thinking — what if someone else had taken it?

This kind of carelessness is unacceptable. I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to others.
