A Hidden Gem in Piraeus: The Street Taverna Delivers Big Flavors and Warm Hospitality
Tucked away in the heart of Piraeus, The Street Taverna is the kind of place that doesn’t shout for attention—but once you’ve found it, you’ll never forget it. With its laid-back, unpretentious charm and unforgettable food, it’s the kind of local treasure that feels like a secret passed between friends.
From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with that quintessential Greek warmth—genuine smiles, attentive service, and a sense that you’re more guest than customer. The space itself blends rustic coziness with urban cool, perfect for everything from casual dinners to long, laughter-filled evenings with friends.
But let’s talk about the real star: the food. Every dish at The Street Taverna is a celebration of traditional Greek flavors with a bold, modern twist. The grilled octopus was smoky and tender, resting on a bed of fava so silky it could be a dish on its own. The lamb chops—perfectly charred, seasoned with wild herbs, and drizzled with fresh lemon—were nothing short of divine. And if you’re a fan of mezze, brace yourself: their tzatziki is garlicky perfection, the fried zucchini chips are addictive, and the saganaki crackles with golden, cheesy bliss.
The wine list leans local, as it should, and the staff is more than happy to guide you through it. Don’t leave without trying a glass of their house white or a bottle of crisp Assyrtiko—it’s the ideal companion to the fresh seafood offerings.
Prices are more than fair, especially considering the quality and generous portions. And just when you think it couldn’t get better, a complimentary dessert appears—perhaps loukoumades drizzled with honey and cinnamon, or a rich spoon sweet that tastes like it came straight from someone’s yiayia’s kitchen.
Whether you’re just off the ferry or spending a night in the port city, The Street Taverna is a must-visit. It’s the kind of place that captures what makes Greek dining so special: flavor, passion, simplicity,...
Read moreI really love their great selection of greek dishes and there were so many things I wanted to try but I only had time for one meal at this place. I decided to go for the moussaka which was fantastic. There was such a great balance of flavours and textures from the meat and vegetables combined into one plate and it was delicious. Their pita was also great. I am not that big of the fries being inside the pita itself but it was still good. I especially enjoyed the lemon creamy sauce that was served with the chicken pita, it was so flavourful and worked so well with the rest of the dish. The service was good, friendly and patient. They were also quite efficient but some of the orders kept getting mixed around so there was maybe a lack of communication between the waiters and waitresses. The thing that bothered me the most was that while we were sitting outside, some people would pass by with stuff to sell and try to sell it to us. They would get into our faces pressuring us to buy their merchandise like battery banks or earphones which we...
Read moreWent with a friend today. The food was decent. As a foreigner, I tried speaking Greek to the waiter and the cashier but can't help feeling that I was infantilized although I made perfect sense.
I asked for a Souvlaki, to which they said they didn't make any and to go to the "place right next to them". Rude response but understandable, I thought, if they don't make souvlaki here that's alright.
However after I ordered something else, the plate came with a small piece of aluminum foil hidden in the food. Me and my black friend were one of the first customers to sit inside but they made us move to the very corner of the place to make room for 4 other foreigners who came AFTER us. I don't know what it is, but if you're a person of color, maybe find a better place where you'll feel welcomed for the...
