Cactus — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

Extremely unprofessional and humiliating experience. We visited this beach bar in our hometown in Rethymno and had asked beforehand if dogs were allowed—we were told yes. As soon as we sat down, our dog barked twice (literally just twice), and the owner suddenly started yelling at us in front of the entire beach.

He shouted things like “Give your dog water!”—even though we had already ordered and were simply waiting for it. When we calmly told him that we had already ordered water, he snapped, “Do you expect me to bring you water?” To which we responded, “Yes, since we ordered from you.” He then continued by shouting, “You’re disturbing the whole beach!”—completely blowing the situation out of proportion.

Instead of addressing us politely or discreetly, he chose to make a public scene and humiliate us without reason. This kind of aggressive behavior is unacceptable and deeply unprofessional.

There are plenty of other beach bars nearby where guests—especially pet owners—are treated with basic respect and dignity. We won’t be returning, and we suggest others stay away...

The rudest service in the whole of Crete at the beach beds provided by Cactus bar. Was made to feel unwelcome on arrival at the beach, and this was only followed up by further rudeness from staff throughout the day, who refused to apologise, instead slamming the money I had paid for the bed down on the table (which I didn’t ask for any refund) saying if I’m not happy just to leave! Sweet beach spot, very friendly and welcoming staff. You buy coffee/drinks and/or food and the sunbeds are free (which is not a given for rethymno beach). The sea is often clean as it is a little bit further away from downtown. Some mellow beats will be playing in the background. Be sure to tip your hardworking beach side service staff!
