Stumbled upon this gem yesterday for a spot of lunch. It's a beautiful, peaceful restaurant in the midst of a host of tavernas offering traditional Cretan food. Unlike the other places which had the usual waiter standing there, trying to get you to come inside, there was no one beckoning you inside the Petra restaurant. We looked at the menu outside and were impressed by the variety of dishes and the fair price. We walked inside, through a simple but elegant interior and out into the main body of the restaurant- a stunning private courtyard of tables with an amazing canopy of vines laddened with grapes above. We were greeted by a very unassuming and genuinely attentive waiter who provided us with a litre bottle of water on the house. We ordered Spaghetti Carbonara, which was delicious and served in a very generous portion. It was so good I had to wipe up every last drop of Carbonara sauce with the bread we had purchased. We had two beers which were excellent and then were presented with a dessert of Water Melon, again, on the house. Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Petra Restaurant in Rethymno, and it truly lives up to its reputation as a hidden gem!!!The courtyard is absolutely magical and immediately puts you in a relaxed, welcoming mood. The food is outstanding!!!Highlights include the lamb wrapped in vine leaves with yogurt sauce, fresh grilled fish for two and the signature Petra Salad 🤤🤤🤤 Each dish bursts with authentic Cretan flavour and generous portions that ensure you won’t leave hungry!!!! The service deserves its own praise..warm and attentive !! Guests are often greeted with treats like watermelon or house wine, and everyone is ready to assist ,such as when a sommelier offered a perfect wine to pair our fish!!!All of these come at excellent value. Reasonably priced dishes and portions!! So I recommend this experience for both couples...
Read moreThis is a lovely location to dine in. The food was good. I had only a Greek salad and the Spinach pies which was all tasty. The house Rose was a nice wine also. I would have had another glass of wine had I been comfortable there. All that said…. The staff was pitiful. I was ignored for quite a while, my first thought was because I was a solo diner but I also saw a large table get up and leave without getting menus. Some tables got attention while others waited 15+ min for menus. It happened to be older people? I wasn’t offered dessert despite other tables getting some. The waiter said maybe 6 words to me the whole time. I did feel like I was inconveniencing them. The nice lady at the pay stand said she tries when I mentioned the waiter. I get it’s hard to find good help. Sad it is costing the...
