Rhodes Old Town is charming and beautiful. But when it comes to authentic Greek culinary experiences you should walk outside, beyond old town’s southern walls.
To Steno (the strait) is located close to St John’s gate in a quiet narrow street. The unassuming entrance shouldn’t deceive you. Inside there is Cosma, a true gentleman, the busser, the headwaiter, and captain of the premises who will tirelessly look after you with a big smile.
I should kindly remind you though. It is our (customer’s) responsibility to make reservations. Because this place is packed and very busy, if you want to have an unforgettable experience give them a call first and make a reservation. Otherwise if they turn you away please understand it would not be their fault but yours.
The meze plates look simple and straightforward. But I liked that. Personally I prefer honest minimalism as opposed to showing off decorative arts. Just the way they looked for centuries. And boy, each and every one of them was delicious. I am not going to tell you what to eat, but get ready for your taste buds burst.
The ambience of the garden was serene, night sky and stars above, local people, families and youngsters all dressed up beautifully, sharing the food on their plates just like their ancestors did, with a bit of delicious food, add a glass of uzo on ice if you like, add your smile and add some conversation. That is the Greek formula really. And that would be to you the beautiful authentic Greek dining experience.
By the way To Steno is very affordable too.
I promised myself to visit this place whenever I visit Rhodes, beautiful island of Greece.
Thank you Cosma and thank...
Read moreThe staff is not polite and arrogant. Especially the serving young guy behaves very impolite and arrogantly if you are there without reservation and then if you stay he changes attitude probably not to get a negative review. Food is good but nothing special for the prices you pay taking into consideration that the place is at the middle of nowhere. You can find several similar places without this behaviour outside the touristic zone of the town! I find the previous reviews a bit manipulated...! ;)
Edited part: Friendly advice, from the way you are answering the reviews shows again this arrogance. I would advice some training of the staff of how to treat customers politely always, independently if they stay or not at your taverna. I managed to experience the arrogance when I was rejected without reservation, but also the friendliness when I waited and seated. Please respect your customers that took time to reach this isolated location! If you want to have only customers with reservations please highlight that clearly on your...
Read moreWe visited this restaurant a second time after enjoying our first visit. The guy running front of house is very welcoming and spent time talking to all his customers. We seemed to be the only ones not well known to him. We sat inside on both occasions but there is also an outside area not obvious from the exterior. The food all tastes homemade and everything was delicious. Over the two visits we tried dolmades, village sausage, fava bean dip, pumpkin fritters, tsaziki, meatballs, boiled greens, Greek salad and small fish. On our first visit we were also given some chickpeas in a tomato sauce to try. Complimentary fruit and honey were given at the end. With a litre of house red the bill came to less than 44 euros on both occasions. Off the usual tourist route but well...
