George and Elena’s is what one expects from a family-run Greek Taverna. It is friendly and welcoming thanks to George himself who constitutes the entire service section of the taverna; He welcomes all the guests, he is very genuine, chats with them and asks them about their holiday. He then takes their orders, fetches their drinks and all their food, when it’s ready. Herein lies the main reason that this review is not 5 stars across the board. Due to George’s great personality, along with the fantastic food and coupled with the fact that they only open for a few hours each evening, the restaurant gets very busy every night. Especially when you consider that it is quite out of the way (it’s about a 20 minute walk from the centre of Messonghi). For this reason George is rushed off his feet and it can sometimes take a while to order more drinks, or a dessert, or even get the bill. (I should just mention that they only do one dessert; cheesecake. But it’s the best cheesecake I’ve ever had)! I cannot help thinking that by having one more person helping with service it would allow George more time to do what he’s really good at, which is making people feel welcome and valued. The food itself is from a limited, traditional Greek menu and is always excellent. As mentioned above, the taverna is located at the side of the main road between Messonghi and Bukari and it doesn’t boast a great sea view. Despite the somewhat slow service and lack of view, we return regularly and will do so again the next time...
Read moreAll I can say is wow. This is really the definition of a family business, even the sons are involved! George is incredibly friendly and very forthcoming. He is a very kind man who really cares about the satisfaction of the diners. The service and atmosphere are impeccable, my only tip would be to bring a lot of bug spray.
The food left us speechless, we decided what we would order before we even arrived and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately, then we saw the food at the table next to us which also looked amazing and smelled delicious, so I guess we have to come back ;)
We had Saganaki with honey as a starter (in my opinion a must!) and we shared the chicken souvlaki and sofrito (both are on the plate in the picture). The chicken was juicy yet also crunchy and extremely flavorful, the sofrito was incredibly tender with a sauce to die for. We also had the white wine which we thought was just right. All in all, this place is an absolute hit and if I could give more stars, I would
Don’t skip this amazing homey local taverna, you will miss out on an amazing meal. It makes sense to make a reservation but George will also tell you when to come back if...
Read moreMy wife Donna-Maria and I visited our friend who lives on the island for the first time a few days ago. We hired a car and drove all over this beautiful Mediterranean paradise, from the beautiful bay at Lefkimmi, all the way to the mountains in the north, always amazed at the breathtaking views and stunning ruggedness that greeted us on every bend. The highlight of the trip however was meeting the charming and funny George who welcomed us like family, and tasting the delicious home-cooked food that Georges mother, Elena and his wife, Anna prepare to order, using age old recipes and the best locally sourced ingredients to create modern classics for those lucky enough to find this gem on their travels. The taverna does get busy in the evenings so booking is advised to avoid disappointment, however, once you are settled the table is yours until you are ready to leave, with no pressure from the family to try to free up tables for other customers. Whether a tourist or a traveler, George and Elena's Taverna should be on your itinerary when planning a...
