Visited this establishment on the 5th of October for the anniversary of my marriage. I was very excited to try the menu because I saw a note on the hotels front desk that said it was all local Icelandic goods that the food was prepared with...
Our reservations were for 7:30 in the evening. Upon arriving, we saw only two other guests in the restaurant, which we thought was due to the extremely high prices. Anyhow, the prices are high (understandable because, what restaurant on the Island isn’t).
The menu contained 3 starters and 3 Entrees... Be prepared to try something new because the combination of ingredients is EXTREMELY unique. For instance my wife had the lamb filet (which was likely the better of the lamb I’ve personally tried before) but it was served with peas with mint infused into it. (Lots of it) Initially, it sounded very eccentric and those are the types of meals that end up being our favorites so we gave it a shot. DID NOT WORK.
I ordered the Icelandic cod. It was served with a purée of some sort, Kale, and asparagus . (Little bit of background, I absolutely am a seafood fanatic and even the fishiest of fish I still manage to very much enjoy.) The cod was not fishy or salty at all but the purée it was sitting on top of was honestly the worst flavor I have experienced throughout my lifetime. The first bite of cod had none of the purée on it and the fish tasted just as you would expect cod to taste. I will not go any more into detail on the food because I think it is to much opinion rather than facts.
Our waiter greeted us and brought us to a table closest to the kitchen door and one of the only tables in plain view from the restaurant entrance. (obviously because they wanted the guests to see us eating so they would not feel hesitant after seeing the menu while waiting to be seated or at the bar). Unfortunately it didn’t appear to work because throughout the hour or so we were present, I would say about 12 out of 15 or so guests walked out.
The waiter __, (leaving blank out of respect) was extremely rude and unpleasant. He did not have a smile on his face at all and was extremely cold to us. My wife and I are the complete opposite of confrontational people so we just ate and paid our bill with a big smile on our faces.
Pretty much, I recommend staying away unless you are feeling risky and want to pay over 15000 ISK for two entrees and a starter with water to drink. For the staff and management. I hate to ever leave negative reviews but under this specific circumstance I felt that the constructive criticism may help for the future of this restaurant.
really, really surprised with the food at this restaurant
we made the trip in the snow storm from our little vik cabin to hotel kria for dinner, where drangar is located
at first, the service was super nice and attentive, but it slowly got worse as the night went on
we were never asked if we wanted additional drinks, not even water, and it took about 15 minutes to get someone's attention so i could pay the bill and leave
despite the service, the restaurant still almost deserves 5 stars because of how excellent the food was
we had the beef tartare as a starter and i had the seafood soup, both are receiving high marks from us but i dont really mess with raw beef so i didnt try the tartare
we had the duck breast and the beef fillet for mains, the duck came with pumpkin, barley, and bok choy, while the beef fillet had mash potato, celeriac, brisket and red wine sauce
my fiancée said there was a ton of food on her plate and felt some of the duck breast was a little chewy, but overall, thought the flavors were really nice
the beef fillet was very good, the sauce was fantastic, and the steak temperature was perfect
there was also a piece of brisket on the plate, which was a little awkward but a nice surprise
why brisket? i am not sure. but i am definitely not complaining
we paid around $170 usd for the both of us, including a glass...
Read moreWe are in the last few days in iceland and I can say that among all the restuants we've tried, this place is so overpriced ($40/person) and the food is so underwhelming. We ordered the cauliflower, the lamb ribeye, the risotto. None of them is good and I truly think a homemade meal can be better than that.
I was told the cauliflower was baked and cooked through, but I was served ONE almost raw floret with a few charred spots using a kitchen torch, along with 3, 4 pieces of green leaves. No more flavor than vinegar and oil, and the presentation is aweful.
Lamb is flavorless as well. I can't even taste any seasoning.
The risotto on the other hand is salty... And the rice is... UNDERCOOKED... making the food bland is one thing, making the food undercooked is another.. honestly I haven't been to any restaurant who can make their risottos uncooked!!!
We tried two other restaurants in the area and they are all better. Trust GOOGLE REVIEW... Ratings...
