My wife and I dined here after a long day out. We arrived early for dinner as we have a 7 month old, and we’re staying next door at the Puffin Hotel. The ambience was cosy, but the service a little cold from the young lady serving us. We ordered the lamb and Atlantic charr, along with some fried chicken and sweet potato fries. Sadly, the lamb was very over cooked, dry and grey all the way through. The fish was also quite dry and overcooked. The chips and chicken were not bad though. When paying the bill, I did politely mention this the young lady. She said she’d pass on the feedback 😒. But here’s the worst part. I had cash that I had changed in London, and preferred to use this instead of card. As I was tired and the room was dimly lit, and not familiar with the cash notes, I accidentally counted out 10,000 kr notes as 1000kr for the 12,750kr total bill. The young lady watched me count it out, and then snatched the cash super quickly before I had even a chance for a second look, and gave a few coins in change. So I ended up paying many many times the bill for a pretty crap meal - criminal in my view. 😡 I only realised what had happened when I had already driven all the way up Höfn the next day, and was checking my cash for another purchase. Upset with myself for the mistake, but equally angry at this young lady for basically stealing from me.😤

One star for the after-taste I got after visiting this restaurant. I ordered lamp fillet but beforehand I checked with the waitress if the meat is fully fried and if there are no raw parts as I am pregnant. She was nice and said laughing ‘of course not, it’s fully cooked’. I got two juicy pieces of lamb that were medium-rare cooked with actually blood in the middle. I came to another waitress saying that I can’t eat raw meat as I am pregnant and I was reassured that the meat would be fully cooked. She said they can fix it and they took my plate to grill it longer. And it was okay, but they grilled only one piece. When I asked to cook another piece too, she returned with my plate, threw it on the table saying nothing. While leaving the first waitress who took my order asked if everything was okay - well, clearly not. But no signs of admitting her mistake. I didn’t expect any special treatment in such touristic place but didn’t expect such attitude either considering that it was the most expensive item on the menu. Clearly the first waitress wasn’t well informed about the menu, otherwise I’d just ordered something else. No need for such arrogance - just learn a bit more about the menu, it’s not that big.

We spent 10 days in Iceland ; and ate at probably 20 restaurants ; so i wont beat this restaurant up on the portions, the slow service ; or expensive bill (these are all common traits in Iceland restaurants) the complaints are as follows

  1. we ordered the fish soup it tasted VERY fishy and the only fish i saw was squid/octopus rings ; it literally was like a local fisherman scraped his bait-box at the end of a day of fishing; into a pot of boiling water (we had amazing fish soup at other restaurants)
  2. upon check out the the man handling the cash quizzed me on whether id like to leave a tip (tipping is not a thing in Iceland) ; i got the sense that the attitude is : "dumb tourists will pay anything to eat at our restaurant and we can serve them anything" "watch ill empty my unused fish bait in this pot of water , bet they eat it too !!" followed by " hey if these dumb tourists want to tip , lets let em tip" ; "in fact we might as well coach them to tip ; they are just dumb tourists...
