Chowman is a brand which first opened in Kolkata and I had very high hopes for the food as Kolkata’s chinese food is amazing. After checking out the reviews on Zomato, we decided to try the place on a Sunday evening.
The restaurant has a seating capacity of around 30 people and we had to wait for around 30 minutes to get the table, which was fair enough. Coming to the food, because of the elaborate menu we were confused and asked the waitstaff to suggest us what we should order.
We were suggested shanghai noodles, hong kong chicken and basil fried rice. Along with that we ordered veg momos.
Now, veg momos had paneer filling along with vegetables which made it a bit dry and I am not sure why veg momos had paneer, if they add paneer in it then it should be mentioned in the menu.
Next, the shanghai noodles and basil fried rice were quite average to our liking. The noodles didn’t seem fresh and the seasoning seemed off. The fried rice seemed like boiled rice mixed with some vegetables, definitely not like the wok tossed fried rice which gives a nice smoky flavour.
The overall food seemed bland and we were told that the noodles and the hong kong chicken would be spicy, which was not the case so I am not sure about the spice levels of the other dishes.
The service was on point and the wait staff was doing a good job. We also received a feedback form at the end which we filled out and received a phone call on the next day, which was good as the restaurant wanted to know the feedback and share it with the team.

Read moreYou would have to do some good research and be extremely aware of the menu and busy timings of this place to make your experience worth it. We tried a variety of dishes, mostly these were hit and miss, no consistency in food or service. The place is small with just 7 tables but good and nice decor. Service is sloooowwww for a small place. The waiters while humble are not great at suggesting dishes. Veg hakka noodles for kids was a good choice for plain non spicy noodles. Barely any flavours but not a matter of concern for the kid. She liked it. :) Paneer salt and pepper was good and a little spicy. Don't order it for the kid. :) Everything from here went down the hill. Shanghai rice was just overtly spicy with no identifiable flavours as such, similar to ball Manchurian gravy which was bland. Strawberry Panna cotta was awful, floury, grainy and hard,. The chef would need to taste real panna cotta, this tasted like a very thick halwa, with sour red mush. Quantities are very good so check before ordering else you may need to package food home. Which is okay but wastage.
I would suggest staying with noodles in this restaurant and starters. That seemed to be the only thing okayish. We had ordered veg meifoon noodles for the kid once and it was very good. Overall an okay place and can be given a try if you research well on your own on what to eat and have decent...
Read moreWe tried only veg here, very dissatisfied to be honest, I mean a place specialised in Chinese when fails to deliver the Chinese taste is very disappointing. We had manchao veg soup, veg spring roll, American corn, chilli garlic fried rice, coin machurian veg, assorted veggies. All tasted the same yr like not a single change in taste. Chilli garlic rice doesn’t had any flavour of garlic, corn were tasteless. And manchurian which they call as coin veg it felt like they mixed water in sezwain chutney and served. I have earlier had nonveg dishes from here and was quite impressed but the veg taste and preparations was awful, we couldn’t have any of it and parcelled everything to give needy ones in street. Later to feel some taste we ordered blueberry mocktail and guess what :| disappointed, Ovio we couldn’t parcelled that so left there only. Place was calm when we visited in weekday lunch no one was there so it was so good and cozy, sitting sofa I felt was not much comfortable. Staffs were well behaved and mannered. Background musics was giving a proper Chinese vibe. I wish the taste could have also matched. Wo as per my opinion - NOT RECOMMENDED ( for veg ),RECOMMENDED (...
