Apart from being dotted with beautiful, intricate temples, Madurai in Tamil Nadu is also known for its delicious food! Here are a few places that you must check out in Madurai to satiate your South Indian palate!
Simmakal Konar Mess
No one does delectable South Indian fare in Tamil Nadu better than the famous Konars in North Veli Street. Do try the yummy kari dosa which consists of a thick dosa, omelette and minced mutton curry. Traditionally known as cow and goatherds, the Konars have made this offal-based delicacy their go-to! Amma Mess
The first thing you see on entering this institution is the multitude of pictures hung up on the wall of the gregarious owner M.A. Senthilvel with renowned movie celebrities. Once seated, try the signature meen kuzhambu (Fish curry), which takes its name from the 1980s blockbuster Muthal Mariyathai Meen Kuzhambu. Amma Mess at Alagar Kovil Road is truly a place to visit if you fancy authentic south Indian non vegetarian fare! Murugan Idli Shop
A few hops and skips away from the famous Madurai Meenakshi Temple, this breakfast eatery is almost always swamped with locals and visitors alike for a plate of piping hot idlis, its four trademark chutneys and a spoonful of its signature mulagapodi. Murugan Idlis, located at West Masi Street, also serves ghee-soaked onion uttappam, which is a must-try! Burmah Idiyappa
Loosely translated to Burmah’s Hopper Shop, this place is the closest you could get to having string hoppers similar to the ones found in Sri Lanka. This tiny eatery has no seating and has since its inception given rise to many copies in the city. But locals and visitors have not stopped visiting this original outlet located opposite Mission Hospital. Try the idiyappams with tomato chutney and...
Read moreUpdate on Review: +1 Star increase from 2 The quality has gone down over my last two visits here. Sambar has become more watery. - UPDATE - - Better now Set Dosa is overpriced at 90/- without any side dish except for sambar and chutney. This is first i have seen while most darshini provide sagu or palya or korma. Chutney was refrigerated cold probably not sure if freshly made for the day or pulled from cold storage. - UPDATE - better now Idli is really hard and not fluffy or soft. -UPDATE - Better now
UPDATE - 5. MINI Idly are typically like mini version of idly. Here they felt like small pieces of regular idly. Across Tamilnadu if you have tried mini idly, this felt like a let down. Parotta served are two pieces with Kurma. When they started kurma was like kurma with veggies. Now it is more masala and bit watery with reduced veggies.
UPDATE - Overall they are going back to average. Once in a while visit
Previous review A typical south indian restaurant (Tamilnadu Style food).
This is like the Darshini's in bangalore but it also has a service option like restaurant in the 1st floor.
The Quality/ flavor and taste is good and it is better to pay the slight premium to have the same like a darshini (stand and eat) . But eating the same in the service floor the premium charges seems a bit too high for the food.
Best items are the breakfast and evening tiffins where in you can find specialties like...
Read moreI had the pleasure of visiting Madurai Idly Shop yesterday and indulging in their Mini Tiffin priced at ₹185. The platter was a complete South Indian delight, featuring soft, fluffy idlis, a perfectly golden and crispy dosa, a crunchy yet soft vada, creamy pongal, and a sweet, aromatic kesari bath. Each item was served with flavorful chutneys and hot sambar, which were the perfect accompaniments to elevate the meal.
The pongal was rich and seasoned just right, while the kesari bath had the ideal balance of sweetness and texture. The presentation on a banana leaf added a traditional touch to the experience, making it feel authentic and special. The portion size was more than satisfying, and every bite reflected the quality and attention to detail in their preparation.
The ambience of the restaurant is simple yet inviting, and the service was quick and efficient. Whether you’re a local or visiting Bangalore, this is a must-visit spot to enjoy authentic South Indian breakfast or meals. I’ll definitely be returning to try out more dishes from their extensive menu. Highly recommended for anyone craving a flavorful and fulfilling South...
