MTR 1924 - A Culinary Journey through Time

My recent visits to MTR 1924 in Gandhinagar, Majestic Bengaluru, have been a rollercoaster of flavors and experiences, marking the celebration of their 100th year in business. Here’s a breakdown of my experiences and thoughts:

First Visit - Lunch Delight During my initial visit, I indulged in a scrumptious lunch that left a lasting impression. The star of the meal was the tantalizing sambar, complemented perfectly with crispy fried ladies' fingers, offering a delightful hint of sweetness. The complete meal, including poori, sagu, poriyal, Rasam, curd rice, pappad, and pickle, was not only flavorsome but also incredibly affordable at just around Rs 200.

Second Visit - A Slight Disappointment My second encounter with MTR 1924 was during a lunch party at my office, where I ordered 20 meals based on my fantastic first experience. Unfortunately, this time the magic seemed to be missing. The sambar, which had stood out so vividly during my first visit, was absent, and the overall quality of the dishes left much to be desired. While it was deemed okay for a one-time meal, it failed to impress for any subsequent visits, especially considering the higher cost per meal at around Rs 230.

Third Visit - Breakfast Bliss Determined to give MTR 1924 another chance, I opted for breakfast on a leisurely Saturday morning. This time, the experience was nothing short of exceptional. The crispy masala dosa and vada served with their signature sweet sambar and chutney were a treat to the taste buds, bringing back memories of my initial visit's culinary excellence.

Overall Verdict Reflecting on my overall experience, MTR 1924's journey of a century in the culinary realm is indeed commendable. While there were hiccups along the way, notably during the lunch party where consistency seemed to falter, the essence of their iconic dishes and flavors remained intact. The sweet sambar, in particular, continues to be a standout feature, showcasing the legacy and mastery of MTR's culinary expertise.

In conclusion, MTR 1924 offers a delightful journey through time, celebrating a century of culinary brilliance amidst occasional setbacks. Here's to another century of flavorful experiences and congratulations on this...

MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Room) in Bengaluru is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic South Indian cuisine in a timeless setting. Established in 1924, this iconic restaurant has maintained its reputation for delivering exceptional food and service for nearly a century.

The ambiance is nostalgic, with its traditional charm and quick service, reflecting the essence of Bengaluru's food culture. MTR is renowned for its wide range of dishes, particularly its signature items like Rava Idli, Masala Dosa, and the unforgettable Filter Coffee. The food is always freshly prepared with high-quality ingredients, and the flavors are consistently rich and authentic. The texture of the dosas is perfectly crisp, and the sambar is a true standout.

What truly sets MTR apart is its attention to detail. Every dish is served with the perfect balance of spices, ensuring a delightful experience for all taste preferences. The staff is friendly and efficient, contributing to the overall pleasant dining experience.

Though the restaurant can get crowded during peak hours, the wait is well worth it for the quality of food and the rich culinary tradition it offers. Whether you're a local or a tourist, MTR remains a top destination for those seeking a taste of Bengaluru's heritage.

Highly recommend visiting MTR for a wholesome, delicious, and culturally enriching...

I recently stopped by the MTR Café on Racecourse Road for a quick evening snack, eager to sample some of their famed dishes. I ordered the rawa idli, masala dosa, and filter coffee, anticipating a delightful experience. However, the results were mixed.

The rawa idli was acceptable—nothing extraordinary, but decent enough. Unfortunately, the accompanying chutney and sagu or sambar seemed past their prime. The flavors were off, lacking the freshness you'd expect from a reputable establishment like MTR. It was a bit disappointing to pair the idli with such uninspiring sides.

The masala dosa, on the other hand, was quite good. It was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a well-balanced filling. It met my expectations, offering the classic dosa experience.

The filter coffee, however, was a major letdown. It was overly bitter and not enjoyable at all. I had hoped for a rich, aromatic brew, but this was just too harsh to savor.

On a positive note, the service was prompt and attentive. The staff were polite and efficient, ensuring a smooth experience in terms of logistics. Despite this, I left feeling that MTR doesn't quite live up to its hype. Given its reputation, I expected more consistency in the quality of the food and drinks. Perhaps this was an off day, but it was enough to make me think twice about...

While in Bangalore, I wanted to taste something nice.. which is more of local taste. Searched in Google and came across this MTR outlet. It was a known name and pushed my thought to venture there. Post my visit, I surely know that they have taken their pre mix concept way too seriously or rather their style of preparation must have come as pre mix package. No idli, no vada for lunch though it's mentioned in the menu.. only stuff available was I believe what's available in a pre mix packing. Was disappointed with the meals that I eventually decided to go for. The guy gave me quick option of choosing from roti, poori or rice. I chose roti, thinking it would be a normal roti but it was more of a rava dosa served in the name of roti and curries were nothing that went along. Curd rice was sweet which again is a first for me! All in all giving 1 🌟 just because I ate there. Not a place where I would want to come back.
