My Delightful Experience at BBR COFFEE by Before British Raj
As I stepped into BBR COFFEE by Before British Raj, nestled on Sirifort Road in New Delhi, India, I was immediately captivated by the inviting ambiance and the promise of a culinary journey through time. The fusion of history and gastronomy was palpable from the moment I laid eyes on the menu, divided into "Before British Raj" and "After British Raj" sections, each offering a unique narrative of India's culinary heritage.
The concept of the menu, aptly named "NO DIVIDE ONLY DIL PE RAJ," beautifully encapsulates the ethos of BBR COFFEE. It's a celebration of India's rich and diverse history, showcasing scrumptious tastes from around the world before British rule, alongside Anglo-Indian favorites that emerged during the colonial era.
Before delving into the culinary delights, I was intrigued by the homage paid to the journey of coffee and tea in India. The narrative of coffee's introduction by the Sufi saint Baba Budan in the 17th century, and the ancient roots of tea dating back to the Vedas, provided a fascinating backdrop to my dining experience. It was a reminder of the deep-seated cultural significance of these beloved beverages in the Indian context.
As a coffee enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn about the meticulous process behind crafting the perfect blend. From understanding the nuances of moisture content to mastering the art of roasting and brewing, the dedication of the team at BBR COFFEE was evident in every sip. Their mission to promote indigenous coffee cultivation and dispel the notion of coffee as a foreign import resonated deeply with me.
Now, onto the culinary delights that awaited me. The Veggie Maggi, a classic favorite with a twist, was a comforting start to my culinary journey. The Chicken Momos, perfectly steamed and bursting with flavor, were a testament to the diversity of Indian cuisine. And the Mrs. Rita Garlic Bread, topped with marinara sauce and a generous layer of cheese, was a delightful indulgence that left me craving for more.
To wash down these delectable treats, I opted for the refreshing Strawberry Crush and the uniquely crafted Jamun Meri Jaan. The burst of flavors in each sip perfectly complemented the richness of the dishes, leaving me thoroughly satisfied and eager to explore more of BBR COFFEE's offerings.
My maiden visit to BBR COFFEE by Before British Raj was nothing short of a culinary revelation. From the rich history embedded in every dish to the passion driving the team behind the scenes, it was an experience that left a lasting impression on my taste buds and my heart. I left with a newfound appreciation for India's culinary heritage and a craving to...
Read moreI along with my wife and another couple visited BBR sometime ago as it is quite close to a place where our children visit for dance class.
The place is made nicely and has almost 30 covers indoors and a can accomodate another approx 8-10 outdoors. However, they can serve only 4-8 people in an hour as they have an EXTREMELY SMALL cooking counter with just 2 induction plates that are operated by just a single chef.
We had ordered very small dishes in breakfast and coffee and the order was not only delayed but was incomplete and given in installments. As a matter of fact if 4 people visit together they can not have a meal together as food items are served one by one and after a gap.
The cappuccino served was cold and when I said that it should be hot, the hostess argued that Cappuccino is generally warm and not hot, instead of taking back the drink and getting me a hot one
The place is all full of pests. We shifted from the first table indoors as there was a cockroach roaming but of no use as there was a spider on the wall next to the second table. When asked what is the reason for the same, the staff stated that since there is a hostel / guest house upstairs the people staying there don't keep it clean.
The place badly needs to be redesigned and should have a bigger kitchen and also a...
Read moreI'm truly not a stickler for details but something that was impeccably off-putting was the café itself. When I had initially heard of this place and saw the name BBR (Before British Raj) I was incredibly interested and curious of it due to the reason that a coffee shop with such a vivid and objective name would have a pleasantly synonymous furnishing and menu to match it. However when I walked in I was horribly disappointed. Instead of a quaint, vintage, and antique coffee shop that represents the culturally rich era of the time before the British ruled India I was presented with a minimalistic copy and paste of every single subjectively modern and aesthetic coffee shop to ever exist since the 2020s. Aside from the horribly inaccurate decor the food itself was quite delectable, if you move past the fact that pizza was introduced in India in the early 1900s (200 years after the BBR era) and that most of the food was introduced to India either during the reign of the British or after it. I would definitely recommend this coffee shop to anybody who has no interest in history whatsoever and only wants...
