We ordered plain dosa, idli set, puttu, and a ginger tea at around 10:45 AM.
Upon arrival we chose a seat and a minute later were told “sit there” and pointed to a different table under the fan. We were happy sitting where we were, it wasn’t offered for us to move, it was essentially demanded.
The food arrived fast, around 5 minutes from ordering.
the idli set was average. The idli were more on the cold side, slightly slimy, and smaller than average. They had a slight soapy taste to them.
the ginger tea was incredibly sweet. Very very very sweet.
the plain dosa was good. Crispy but soft and a good size with good flavour.
Both the dosa and idli were served with sambar and coconut chutney, no red chilli/tomato chutney.
the puttu I have not tried yet, I ordered it as a parcel (takeaway). They are listed for 15 INR each. I was told I had to order a set of 3, which was confusing as the idli was only sold in a set, so if I had to buy 3 puttu, why list them individually.
The bag I received with my parcel contained the wrapped up roll of puttu (presumably cut up into 3 pieces, quite small), and a bag of curry, which I assumed to be sambar.
We didn’t pay attention when we went to pay but noticed once we left that we were overcharged 5 INR for the ginger tea (20 INR rather than 15 INR) and 40 for the puttu (85 INR rather than 45 INR).
We went back and let them know, we were told “we don’t defraud” and told we ordered black tea instead of ginger tea (we asked for no milk in the ginger tea, but still ordered ginger tea, you’d think if anything taking the milk out would make it cheaper) and given 5 INR back.
When it came to the puttu however, we were told that we ordered 3 pieces, a set, and that we had to order 3, which was fine. So that was 45 INR. We were then told the curry was 40 INR, as it was not sambar, but rather a chickpea curry. When we told them we didn’t order it they responded “it’s included in the puttu set”, except we didn’t want it, we didn’t ask for it, we didn’t think anything of it as sambar is almost always included in breakfast sets.
All I really wanted was a singular piece of puttu to have with some leftover food at home. I had to order 3 though, annoying and not how the menu mentions it, but sure. But then forcing a curry onto me that costs almost as much as the 3 pieces of puttu, nope.
After insisting that we did not want the curry at all the man threw his hand up in disgust and told the cashier to give us the 40 INR and take the curry back.
To sum it up, the plain dosa was the only good thing, and the rest is cheap for a reason.
In fact, it’s not even cheap. At the time of writing, these were all standard prices for the items we ordered (although the puttu is small for the price).
As I’ve learned every time I eat out in Fort Kochi, you’re better off just ordering from further away via...
Read moreIn last days of June .. with drizzly rain 🌧️ and empty stomach we chose to taste some pure South Indian food.. believe me .. for Pure Veg Travellers .. this is an amazing experience. Not just food but staff, ambience everything was delightful.
First and foremost : Ambience : those rainy droplets are making surroundings so exotic one can't imagine. And open restaurants with soothing lights had made it ever more alluring.
Secondly : Food : for fresh South Indian cuisine I don't reckon there is any better place than this in the city.. I travelled a lot to taste different kinda food and cuisines but ... This place is beyond the bar.. we actually ordered : Ghee roasted dosa : Masala dosa : Schezwan noodles : Chana curry with puttu ( 2 minutes of silence for those who don't even know what puttu is ). FYI : JUST FOLLOW THE TRADITION AND EAT THIS WITH BARE HANDS ( wash your hands before ) : 2 tea ( chai ) : 1 coffee ( smell it first, it deserves your time ) : Red colored complementary water which was actually an ayurvedic drink made up of boiled banana leaves.
Last but not least : Staff : Effervescent vibes are surrounded by this place are also because of polite, calm and attentive efforts of their staff. I was just mesmerized by their commitment and preparedness for us. Their suggestions from traditional food serving to method of consumption makes us feel quite special.
I am just happy with my decision and I strongly recommend this place. Special comment : don't mess with host .. his Hindi is way more good. Just talk with Mr. Salman : his perspectives about life were interesting to...
