I reached Jeff Biryani's outlet in Trivandrum at 11:30am. There was someone there to ask if I wanted to dine in or take-away my food, and to note down my name. There are two separate lists for dine in and take away, and I was second on the take away list. At 12 noon, they started calling people who wanted to dine in. Take away started at 12:15. When dine in started, the man, the myth, the legend Jeff Saab came outside to welcome everyone, which was really nice of him. I got in at 12:20 pm, and ordered one Apricot Mutton Biryani and one Afgani Chicken. The biryani costs Rs. 350, and the chicken costs Rs. 200. Packing the food was quick enough, and I was out of there by 12:30 pm.
If there's one thing you take away from this rather long review, it's that the meat was super super super soft. I have never had mutton or chicken this soft before, and this is coming from a self-proclaimed foodie. It literally crumbles between your fingers as soon as you touch it. The cartilage of the chicken, which you usually have to bite into pretty hard, melted in my mouth. I had high expectations, but my god, saying I was impressed is an understatement. Now that we've established that the texture is excellent, the taste wasn't far behind. It's a very unique flavour, not like the other biryanis you get around here where the flavour of the masala dominates. In Jeff Biryani, the flavour of the masala, the rice and the meat go perfectly together hand-in-hand. As for the afgani chicken, you expect it to be bland or slightly sweet when you look at it, but that is not the case. It is packed with arabic flavour. Usually, when you eat something you get an idea of what they added to it, but the afgani chicken doesn't give away any hints. Everything added comes together oh so beautifully, and again, the meat is super super soft.
When I went to wash my hands after the meal, they were oily. Normally, this would have been a negative for me. But for some reason, this time, the oily feel of the fingers gave a feeling of completeness to the meal.
The biggest drawback about Jeff Biryani for me is the crowd. It's because the food is so good, and there's nothing anyone can do about it, but that's the biggest hassle. I spent one hour in total to get the food, and that's only because I came half an hour before they open for service. The later you come, the more it gets delayed. Kudos to the restaurant staff for managing the crowd in a proper way, though.
Another thing most people feel is that it's too pricey. If you look at it quantity-wise, some may feel so (although it was just right for me). But considering the quality and taste of the food, the price is fully justified.
Pro-Tip: Go eat at Jeff Biryani on a day when you don't have any urgent work to do, because after you eat this, all you'll want to do is lie down, relax and think about how good it was for the rest of the day. Good food should make you feel that way, and Jeff...
