B. Merwan is one the oldest Iranian Café established in 1914 and still serving in Mumbai. Close to Grant Road Railway Station, just out of platform 4., It's a treat for those who love bakery items. Opens daily at perfect 7:00AM, and you will see a whole bunch of people gathering there for just a morning breakfast. The ambience is still preserved and tables, chairs, fans, mirror on the wall, checkered tiles etc will just make you fall in the mood.
Coming to food quality., I'd say, the Irani Chai (Tea) is below average., I always ask for 'Pani kam chai', and still feel the tea is watery...!
The main attraction here is Mava Cake., It's so perfectly baked that it cracks open and so soft..!!! It's not too sweet neither too sticky., You'll just love having those Mava Cake to make a good start for the day..!
Now, coming to Bun Maska and Bun Maska Jam., Those are average buns with very fine maska that is neither sweet nor sour. The taste of bun with chai blends so evenly that it'll take your chai experience to a whole Iranian level...! Bun Maska Jam is for sweet tooth like me..!!
Also, I've personally tried all above items there and there's another Veg. Pattice worth to give it a try. It's so layered and crisp, that you'll feel like it's a khari with veggie stuffing inside. The stuffing is nothing but mixture of a mashed potatoes with peas., And trust me, it's good to have it on table.
Apart from all those things, egg omlets is what all were having there..! I've heard that it's great, but never tried as I'm a vegetarian.
There's a lot more to explore there, you just need to visit the place to experience it.
Below is what I paid for what i had., Tea - ₹ 12 (Nothing like cutting available there or they don't charge extra for Pani kam Chai) Bun Maska - ₹ 15 / pc. Bun Maska Jam - ₹ 25 / pc. Veg. Pattice - ₹ 15 / pc. Mava Cake - ₹ 15 / pc.
Hope you guys like the review..! I've mentioned my personal experience after been there for 4 times...! I felt like sharing this place as it is rare to find such a cool place which is...
Read moreI went to this place on a recommendation of a friend who frequents this place for breakfast and gave amazing reviews. The moment I entered this place, it reminded me of the cafes in 70s bollywood movies - be the chairs and tables, the arrangement or the interiors.
As in other Parsi cafes, people here also have no qualms on sharing the tables and I shared the table with one gentleman. I tried the obvious - tea and bun maska, khari biscuits, omelette and parceled the famous mawa fruit cake. I also wanted to try out the pudding but they had ran out of pudding by that time.
Tea was good, although nothing that I found special but it was made well. Khari biscuits disappointed me a little as, in terms of look and taste, it was like any other Khari biscuit. It didn't score well if I compare it to the one I had in Yazdani which was amazing. Also, one of them was not crisp but slightly doughy.
What amused me was bun maska as it was a little different than I expected - two thick bread slices with butter in between. Breads of shape that are typically used for garlic bread. But from the pictures shared here, I see there is bun maska with the actual bun, so they might be calling both of them the same and serving whatever is available.
I loved the omelette as it was perfectly made - neither overcooked nor under-cooked from any place. The combination with bread - eating like roti-sabzi was unique and went well.
However, the star of the day was mawa fruit cake and now I know why it is famous for. It is definitely a must try.
The staff was good and the service was amazingly fast even though the restaurant was full at that time. What I also loved was, excluding the cake, the entire bill was just around 70. So, if you're short on cash but want a heavy breakfast under 100, this is a place to be!!
All in all, this place is a must visit for its food, service and...
Read moreA Parshi bakery cum eatery, catering to generations of Mumbaikars since last century. You can safely conclude whether one is from Mumbai or an outsider by his knowledge of Merwan & Co. Situated bang opposite Grantroad station of South Mumbai, religiously churning out crates & crates of Mava Cake, Mava Samosa (which is a puff), delicious Khari biscuits, puddings and several other items. But it is famous for basically Mava Cake only for the uninitiated. The typical antique furniture we get here is one of the last remaining culture of Irani restaurants of Mumbai. A few years ago the owners snared us Mumbaikars by announcing closure of this eatery. And Mumbai reacted like it's a Doomsday. There were lines outside this eatery starting from midnight, just to have last Nava Cake or last Omelette pav or last pani kum or last nava samosa or last khari. Oh my God, I think the owner, overwhelmed by the love of it's patrons, rescinded his decision of closure. And Mumbaikars heaved a huge sigh of relief that one of its USP is still running. Still you hardly ever get a written bill on the table. The waiters still calculate and shout your bill amount to the cash counter on which sita the owner himself with his very trusted lieutenant. My mother used to go when she was working at State Transport department in 1958 or so, she is no more now. I used to go there along with my kids and am still going there as the kids have grown up and no longer come with their parents. But they also go there and I know it by the smell of their breath and I...
