According to the Hindu mythology, modak is believed to be Ganesh's favourite food, and hence he is also known as Modakapriya, someone who likes modak. As per the rituals, 21 modaks are offered to the Lord Gajanan as bhog and eventually served as prasad to all the devotees. Ganesha is the Lord of Wisdom, Success and Good Luck.

This is how the restaurant derives its name – MODAKAM (Prasad from Lord Ganesha). You will also find a big modak carved at the top of the restaurant.

Modakam is situated right outside the iconic and famous Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir. The temple has its foundation 2 centuries ago on 19th November, 1801. A small temple has now turned into a grand premise housing many deities. The Siddhivinayak Ganesha idol is quite unique and unusual as it was carved out of a single black stone and has Ganesha’s trunk to the right instead of left.

The temple is situated in the heart of city Mumbai. Centrally located and easily accessible via various public transport services.

Modakam is a pure vegetarian restaurant with multiple fast food options. It serves variety of maharashtrian, south Indian and Punjabi cuisines. They also specialize into fasting food items as well.

Starters :

KOTHAMBIR WADI, an authentic maharashtrian dish, had a beautiful colour of green and brown. Fried perfectly to make the outer layer crisp. Served along with coriander chutney and ketchup. A must-have!!!

CHEESE PAKODA, one of the most delicious snack dishes, were bought hot from the kitchen. Crispy layer outside and melting cheese on the inside was a perfect mix.

Main course:

Restaurant has a live PAV BHAJI counter right at its entrance. The aroma of pav bhaji fills the ambience and you can’t hold back in ordering one. The dish surpasses the expectations.

Many devotees come walking to the temple from different parts of Bombay and haven’t eaten anything till the darshan is over. Hearty meal of PANEER TIKKA MASALA AND ROTI is a big recommendation to anyone looking for a full family meal. After all the hard work, pamper your system with some protein.

Juices/Milkshakes:

King of fruits and yogurt, tongue’s delight is MANGO LASSI. Perfectly sweetened, not too thick nor too thin is a healthy smoothie along with food.

How about a feast for your eyes and taste buds? A must try is ROSE FALOODA. Modakam also adds chunks of jelly pieces. Kind of took me back to my childhood days.

Desserts:

Ever thought of a spicy ice cream? GUAVA ICE CREAM with sprinkle of chilli powder was a blast of taste’s in the mouth. It is a wonderful mix of sweet and spicy (very little). Almost felt like eating guava fruit with masala.

Modakam aaye aur Modak nahi khaya toh kya khaya? But how about modak with a twist – MODAK ICE CREAM. It is unique and different. Modakam’s speciality.

So overall it was a good experience with multiple flavours... Service is quick & rates are reasonable.. Definitely a good option for some quick snacking with family & friends.

Do come for darshan and a...

My cousins came to Mumbai from Punjab for the 1st time last week for their summer vacation . One top of their tourist list was a visit to Siddhivinayak Temple . We had an entire day planned for shopping , watching the latest Avengers movie , sight seeing & eating out . Post the darshan at the temple after standing in the long queue we were highly exhausted cause of the heat & dint have any energy left to travel any further .Yes we were all famished after a hectic day & wanted to have good food . Just at the entry of Siddhivinayak temple there is a liliputian eater called Modakam . We all literally attacked the tiny restaurant which is all veg . At the entry itself you are greeted to a displat full of extremely tempting assorted varieties of exotic & premium quality modaks which you simply cannot miss .

We ordered the ukdiche modak ( steamed modak ) as its the Maharashtrian speciality which my Pubjabi relatives had heard about but never tried . The outer cover of the modak was made of soft melt in the mouth rice dough & filled with jaggery & grated coconut flavoured with elaichi .They simply fell in love with this delicacy & packed a box to relish at home .

Next we tried the famous misal pav with is another famous Maharashtrain speciality . Note : Usually I have been disappointed eating misal at various outlets in Mumbai as it is overly oily , immensly spicy & lacks quality . But to my utter surprise the misal at Modakam was simply Fabulous ! It was perfectly balanced , was not at all oils , not at all spicy ( which all age group people can eat ) served with soft pav . Yes we all enjoyed it & couldnt stop digging into it .Highly recommended .

Next we ordered the kothimbir vadi which was again superlative in all respect .Shaped in triangles & not at all oily again perfectly balanced it was sheer quality food .

We were all curious to try the special thaali priced at ₹180/- . Oh my God ! Unbelievable in all respect they served on a plate shaped like a leaf having 2 bowls of paneer gravy vegetables , 1bowl of dal tadka , jeera rice ,fresh fruit bowl , 3 large chapati's , pickle , salad , papad & dahi wada . Each & every item was bursting with flavours & we simply couldnt accept the fact that so much food with such high quality can be available in a place like Mumbai for a mere ₹180/- . The quantity is generously sufficient for 2 people .Highly Recommended .

Post the hearty meal for desserts we tried the fresh aamras & kharwas . Again we were taken aback with the freshness & top notch quality of both the desserts . Both were perfectly balanced in sweetness which all age group people can enjoy as it was not overly sweet as available in rest of the places .

We were highly content with the overall experience as the tiny restaurant is clean , hygenic & the service is at lightening speed . I have to mention . This place is...

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/08/2024 If you're looking for a delightful breakfast experience in Dadar, MODKAM Refreshments is a must-visit spot, especially for devotees and food lovers alike. Nestled conveniently near the renowned Siddhivinayak Temple, MODKAM serves up a culinary feast that is nothing short of sensational! I had the pleasure of relishing their morning breakfast dishes, and let me tell you, each bite was a burst of flavor. The Kothimbir Vadi was exceptional—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, served piping hot. I found myself ordering it not once, but four times! That's a testament to how addictive and delicious it is. Now, let's talk about their Ukdiche Modak. These little dumplings of joy are incredibly soft and melt in your mouth. The traditional stuffing of coconut and jaggery, enhanced with the aromatic notes of cardamom and nutmeg, was an absolute treat for the taste buds. Just when I thought I was full, the taste lingered, leaving me wanting more. Truly, "pet bhar gaya par man nahi bhara" (my stomach is full but my heart is not). The Butter Sada Dosa was another highlight of my meal. Perfectly crisp, with just the right amount of butter, it was a satisfying accompaniment to the rest of my breakfast. Their fresh fruit juice was refreshing and added a perfect touch to complete the meal. I did have a *slight disappointment with the Puranpoli. I had requested ghee with it, but was informed they add it beforehand. Unfortunately, when it arrived, the Puranpoli was smaller than expected and lacked the ghee I was looking forward to. Given the busy atmosphere, I didn't bring it to the staff's attention, but I hope they consider this feedback.* Later I ate that dry puranpoli with chutney of kothimbir vadi. Also, *I kindly urge the team at MODKAM to serve a small bowl of ghee with the Modak. The combination of warm Modak and ghee is nothing short of divine!* In conclusion, MODKAM Refreshments delivers an exceptional breakfast experience that shouldn't be missed. With an array of delicious dishes and cozy vibes, it's a splendid choice for a morning meal. I can't wait to return for more of their delightful offerings!
