Thangabali is already one of the most trusted and popular restaurants when it comes to South Indian cuisine in Mumbai. Happened to visit the Mahim outlet and was simply blown away by their offerings. For the nonce, Thangabali, for me is the best place you can go to gorge on some authentic and delicious South Indian food.
The outlet is not too big but is arranged very well. The proper southern decor is colorful and quaint whipe the lighting is apt. The staff is welcoming and the tables are really comfortable. The food menu holds spectacular dishes from Southern India and also some specialities from other countries. We called for :
Pepper Fry Chicken : The dish consisting of lightly spiced chicken with peppercorns and curry leaves had a different texture altogether giving it a crunch and softness at the same time. It's a simple appetizer but keeps you wanting for more.
Thangabali Fried Chicken : Undoubtedly the star of the starter show, you cannot miss this at any cost. The chicken is marinated in a green masala of chillies and coriander and coated in flour and is deep fried. To give it the maximum South Indian feels, the fried chicken then is sprinkled on with the famous gunpowder chutney. The batter coating is super thin you get more juicy chicken out of this dish. Must order !
Sri-Lankan Chicken Lollypop : Tender Chicken drumsticks throughly doused in ground spices and curry leaves. You have to have it to understand the tenderness of the chicken which was mind-blowing.
Mangalorean Chicken Ghee Roast : Ghee Roast tops everyone's list when they visit here and the dish surely does justice even to the highest expectations. Chicken marinated in yogurt and spiced overnight and cooked in lots of ghee until the dish is fully saturated, it's just otherworldly ! We had it with Malabari Parotta to balance the spice and give it a little crunch. Again must order !
Kundapura Chicken : This dish was the best of our course and is indigenous to every South Indian household. Made with lots of garlic and coconut milk and slowly simmered until the chicken is cooked in the spices, it had us from the get go with some incredible flavours. Pair it with Neer Dosa or Appam to get the most out of it. Must try !!
Paal Payassam : A perfect bowl of sweet porridge at the back of a spicy main course. Rice slowly cooked in sweetened milk with cardamom and lots of almonds, pistachios and cashews. Superb end to our meal !
The ambiance is pretty chilled and is perfect for a family dine in. The manager is a great host and takes good care of you while dining. Our server for the day, Mr. Kavir had some great suggestions and answered all our inquisitive questions with patience and poise. Everything from the walls to the dishes are themed in a South Indian way giving you a authentic feel. The portions are incredible and I would definitely say that the price point is more than worth it.
To sum it up, Thangabali is one of the most sought out places for South Indian food lovers and should be on your list too. Everything from the food to the overall experience was top class and has stuck with me. 100% recommending it to...
Read moreFirst time as a Foodie I came across this word "Akhand Bharat's Cuisine" Can you imagine only one ingredient has tied up Akhand Bharat cuisine for centuries That's coconut 🥥 We read in history, kings fought wars over spices Maharaja & Newabs exchanged the secrets of their cuisines across Akhand Bharat. Our Indian cuisine and culture are shared, modified, upgraded over centuries. "Thangabali" Group of Restaurants are serving the Mumbaikars for more than 4 years in the best possible authentic way by preparing Southern Authentic Traditional delicacies. Yes, how can Southern traditional dishes become popular in Mumbai -- that's the biggest myth they have busted. Good food has no boundaries of region or culture. It will establish itself by it's own rights. Old is Gold - is right 👍 I being a Bengali, used to mustard-oil-cooked-food. Love the food of Thangabali, which is mostly cooked-in coconut-oil.
The lovely light and flavorful dishes are unique in taste. Not over-powered by spices. The right quantity and variety of spices are used for different preparations. Here food is presented the way it's prepared for centuries. Nothing artificial, no-extra enhancement. The Beauty of Originality ✔️
Met Mr Raghav, the manager of this outlet. He belongs to South, have a thorough knowledge of the cuisines of 5 Southern States. From the design of menu card, drinking water served in copper vessels, food is served in heavy kansa vessels, background music, brass diya, wall painting of Boat Race of Backwaters - Kerala It's A Total Experience altogether 👍 Vegetarian dishes are excellent But being a hard-core non-vegetarian I have few of my personal favourite dishes.
Thangabali Fried Chicken -- deep fried tender chicken pieces, with a heavy coating of Malgapodi / Gun powder
Pepper Fry Chicken -- Black pepper is considered as the "King of the Spices" Small boneless chicken pieces are shallow fried & generously garnished with freshly grounded black pepper.
Kerala special Chicken stew with Appams -- Tender chicken pieces with cut vegetables are cooked in mild creamy coconut milk. The aromatic curry with soft fluffy Appams are one of my favourite combination dish. The happiness can't be described in words, go or order at home to enjoy.
Chettinad Chicken Biryani -- Chettinad cuisine has a distinctive feature in it's own for the way spices are used in this cuisine. Mostly spicy, aromatic. Black pepper and red chillies along with aromatic spice created this cuisine -- one of the most popular one. The Chicken Biryani is very moist, spicy thick gravy along with chicken pieces are layered along with aromatic basmati rice.
Traditional desserts -- Rose Badam kulfi is really a lovely creation.
Paal payasam is rich creamy rice kheer, cooked for hours with lot of patience. Served chilled, garnished with finely chopped almonds. Home delivery services are available through Apps (Branded masks are provided) Hygienic food & clean ambiance Body temperature checking & sanitization are strictly followed. One of my favourite place for...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Thangballi, a charming South Indian restaurant nestled in the heart of Mahim. From the moment I stepped foot inside, I knew I was in for a treat. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with traditional South Indian rock songs playing softly in the background.
One of the first things that caught my attention were the brass utensils in which the food was served. It added a unique touch to the dining experience and made me feel like I was truly indulging in authentic South Indian cuisine. And speaking of authenticity, the restaurant went above and beyond by serving water in copper tambya n pela, a traditional way of offering water in the region. It was a small detail, but it made a big impact on me.
Now let's talk about the food. Oh my, every dish I tried was bursting with flavor and creativity. We started off with the chicken soup, flavored with green chili, coriander, and ginger. The combination of these ingredients was simply divine, and it left me craving for more. But before I could indulge in seconds, the butter garlic prawns were brought to the table. The name of the dish itself sounded intriguing, and it did not disappoint. The prawns were perfectly cooked in a generous amount of garlic-infused butter, resulting in a lip-smacking flavor that I simply cannot forget.
Next up, we decided to try the Manglorian curry with neer dosa and rice. The portion size was impressive, and the flavors of the curry were outstanding. The balance of spices was spot-on, and the curry had a rich and creamy texture that was incredibly satisfying. My kids, who are usually picky eaters, absolutely loved this curry and finished off their plates without any fuss.
Just when we thought we couldn't eat any more, we decided to order another round of chicken soup. It was just as delicious as the first time and served as the perfect palate cleanser. Throughout our meal, Mr. Kabir Kohli, our server, went above and beyond to make our dining experience memorable. He was knowledgeable about the menu and suggested dishes that we would have never tried on our own. His warm and friendly demeanor added an extra layer of hospitality to our evening.
Before leaving, I decided to try the masala rawas fish with a hint of tamarind. It was a delightful blend of flavors, and the tamarind added a tangy twist to the dish. The fish was cooked to perfection, flaky and moist, and the masala coating brought it to a whole new level. It was the perfect ending to a truly outstanding meal.
At Thangballi, the quality of food, unique presentation, and attentive service combine to create an extraordinary dining experience. I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try if you're in the mood for some seriously tasty South Indian cuisine. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. The food is really tasty that I forgot to...
