My association with this place goes back to the time when my maternal grandfather was just a normal Indian railways employee looking for a quick snack. The universe blessed him with a small south Indian breakfast place; just opposite his office.
He started eating at this place regularly and became a patron. Whenever my mother (a child at that time) visited his office, he would take her to Sagar. Everything available here; the normal southie snacks whose names the waiters shoot at you –vada, dosa, masala dosa, idli, filter coffee was top notch! Needless to mention that it was reasonably priced and extremely tasty! This factor seems to be missing in our generation. Mostly the hype about places is more than they deserve.
So coming back to the ‘SAGAR AND ME’ story … Time progressed and Sagar became a big restaurant with an expansive menu covering Punjabi, Chinese and south Indian food. As time passed; my mom had no option but to grow up, get married and give birth to me! We stayed near Pune Railway station till I was in 3rd standard. Almost every outing started or ended with this place. The taste somehow never changed.
The reason for the never-changing taste is… It’s a family run restaurant. No prizes for guessing where the family is from! Obviously (nobody makes better south Indian food than these people) - Mangalore/udupi! My mother still works in the railways and her office has shifted to Koregaon Park. We go to this place when we crave soulful tasty food. The standout dishes are veg bhuna, mushroom baby corn masala, mushroom lazeez, veg tangdi, paneer lambha and all the south Indian dishes. The Chinese food is satisfactory.
The story of sagar is the story of my family…my grandfather used to eat here when it was a small shop, and he lived in a tiny 1 room flat. My mom has been eating here from the time she was a small kid through the phase when she was a young adult, till the time when she has a 27 year old son. I have been eating here throughout my 27year life. I plan to bring my wife and kids here someday, and my grandkids too! Sagar has grown into a legend now. Every restaurant that opens besides it flops miserably! I know this is negative, but it shows the stature of this place. It doesn’t boast of a vibrant ambience. I don’t care about that factor because it’s my home- my personal space. So…to sum it up- Life changes,...
Read moreJust loved the food we had. Initially we didn't had this our itenary; but then we went and ordered the food. The initial impressions were good many employees were eager to help us out to get our place. Then we ordered some food and must the food was super tasty. One of our group member just had the tea being on fast and he liked it so much that he had it second time and made us to order some for ourselves. All the hotel employees were kind and had a happy face which inturn makes the customers happy. The place is at a prime location opposite the pune railway station. Only the problem we faced is as usual what most Punekars face is "Parking". The hotel has two wheeler parking which is accessible following a roller coaster ride from road ans footpath. The parking can hardly accomodate 15 bikes which i think might be a nightmare when it is full. To summarise the review i can say the food is value for money if the parking issue...
Read morei am giving 5 stars for the quality and quantity of the foods but i will say that some of their staffs wait for the tips which is not a good thing and i must say it's not a good way that you are serving the customers. but at the end this is the supreme place just in front of pune railway station cab exit point so you can get that place easily, nice environment and surrounding and if you will take a seat in corner just side of glass then you will feel something special like you can enjoy the view as well as your food. In their menu i must say if you are going overe there must try the veg thali and masala papad.....it is delicious and the shrikhand which they give in the thali is...
