Murugan Idli Shop — Restaurant in Tamil Nadu

I went to Murugan Idli shop, Anna Nagar, Shanthi Colony Road on 5th Jan, 2025 to have dinner with my family. While having Dinner, a server has brought in different varieties of sweets on a plate and offered us to choose. Then unwittingly we thought it was complimentary and took two plates from what he had offered (as I have observed while entering the shop, every table has different sweets). The person who has offered us sweets has not informed us about charging of the sweets to our bill and even went ahead suggesting us additional plate of sweets when we took one plate initially. This very much nailed their tactics of pushing us to take more in the impression of being voluntary. Then after seeing the bill only, we realized the sweets are charged in our bill and not complimentary. This is a cheap marketing tactic by the management of Murugan Idli shop to improve their sweet sales. I felt very bad for having fallen for this cheap trick and not at all expected this from one of the renowned restaurants in Tamil Nadu. Regular customers may defend the management by saying it is always chargeable as I understood from conversation I had with the guy on the next table. But for a first time customer like me, it felt like cheating and fraud and forced me to write this post. Even the sweet cost has become 30% of my total bill. UPDATE: Raised rating after visiting several other vegetarian restaurants and trying the masala dosas there: this one isn't great but it is the best of the lot. So, okay 4-stars now simply because the masala dosa filling is better than any of the other vegetarian restaurants I've tried over the last 6 weeks.

Not as a great as I thought it would be. The dine-in facility is rather basic but acceptably clean for Chennai, I guess. I tried the Medhu Vada and Masala Dosa. They tasted nice but that's about it. I liked the variety of chutney they served, i.e. coconut, a kind broken-pulses/lentil thing, mint etc. Staff and service were fine. I wonder why this place has compromised on their food quality! Few years back Murugan Idli Shop was doing very good and taste was outstanding, now it’s just shattered.

Got a few items delivered home, along with the quality their quantity on rice items have come down. I specifically told them not to add any chillies in it and all I get is only chillies, the rice portion seemed to be less! Lemon rice tho was okish but the quantity was 👎 the portion served looked like it was a side dish 😕

Straight ah had sweet Pongal, damn it’s too sweet to have another spoon .. say thegatuthu, it’s like the Pongal is floating in the ghee 😅
