Nimtho Restaurant – Fine Dine? I Was Just Fine to Get Out

This place claims to offer a fine dining experience — the only thing fine was finally leaving.

From the start, there were red flags I regret ignoring. I ordered Buff Noodles, Veg Thakali Thali, momos, and an alcoholic drink — and it took forever to arrive. Even a basic request like water took 30 minutes, and the server wouldn’t leave the can at my table. Every glass had to be asked for like a luxury.

Service was pathetic. A waiter took spoons from our table and gave them to another one. Took 10+ minutes to get replacements. Then he spilled my drink, didn’t clean it, and I had to wipe the mess with tissues — which again took forever to arrive.

The ambience was miserable — no ventilation, we were sweating, and the place seemed severely understaffed. If it hadn’t already gotten late and I hadn't waited so long, I would've walked out.

As for the food:

Buff noodles were a miss.

Momos were the only saving grace.

Veg Thakali Thali was unique but overpriced with tiny portions.

And then came the real low point — I went to the washroom and it was a disaster:

Filthy and unhygienic

No staff in sight

No water available even to wash hands

Slippery floor outside that nearly made me fall

Honestly, this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. Overhyped, overpriced, unhygienic, and outright uncomfortable. No clue how it’s rated so highly.

👉 STAY AWAY. You’ve...

Located near MG Marg in Gangtok, Nimtho offers an authentic dive into Sikkimese and Nepali cuisine, with a unique experience that goes beyond just the food. The restaurant itself is a warm, inviting space that reflects the spirit of Nepali culture. One of the standout features is a small corner inside the restaurant that beautifully replicates a traditional Nepali kitchen. This setup gives you a glimpse into the heart of Nepali home cooking, complete with earthen pots, wooden utensils, and the cozy, rustic ambiance typical of a Nepali household.

The kitchen corner isn’t just for show—it educates diners about the traditional methods of cooking that many in Nepali communities still use today, with an emphasis on slow-cooking, natural ingredients, and family recipes passed down through generations. It’s a nod to the simpler, yet richer ways of life in the hills.

As for the food, Nimtho serves their dishes in a kasa thaal, a traditional brass plate, which adds a touch of authenticity to the dining experience. The thali includes a variety of Sikkimese staples—rice, gundruk, saag, kinema, dal, pickles, and flavorful curries, offering a perfect balance of textures and tastes. The pork and chicken curries are particularly popular, rich with spices and slow-cooked to perfection.

For those seeking a deeper connection to Nepali culinary traditions, Nimtho delivers both in flavor and atmosphere, making it a must-visit...

If you’re looking for a place that truly captures the heart and soul of local cuisine, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and the comforting aroma of freshly prepared dishes. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, with traditional decor that adds to the overall charm and authenticity of the place.

We ordered several local specialties recommended by the staff, and each one was a standout. The flavors were rich and well-balanced, clearly made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. You can tell that a lot of care goes into both the preparation and presentation. perfectly cooked and seasoned, just like a home-cooked meal.

The service was equally impressive. The staff was attentive without being overbearing, and they were more than happy to explain the ingredients and origins of the dishes, which added a special touch to the experience.

Portions were generous, prices were reasonable, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a casual lunch or a cozy dinner with friends and family while truly getting a taste of the local culture.

Overall, this restaurant offers more than just a meal—it delivers a genuine cultural experience through its food, service, and setting. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors who want to explore authentic flavors in a warm, friendly...

Nimtho is one of the most famous restaurants in Gangtok. I was amazed at the decoration of the restaurant It’s not like any other food restaurant, which is overhyped. It truly deserves the compliment for serving the best dishes in Gangtok I have tried their various food But my most famous was bhuteko mutton and their Jhol Momo. The Bhuteko mutton had a very amazing charcoal flavour, and the pieces of mutton will melt in your mouth while you wanna chew on it, the flavours of the is just amazing and it cannot be described by words. You must try it once in your lifetime. Coming to the part of the jhol Momo, it is one of the best jhol momos, I have ever tried in my life. It was filled with tender and juicy meat, and it was soaked in the curry the combination of both of them is just delicious I have also tried their mutton curry, but the above mentioned items just stole my heart The pricing is on the higher side that I must agree to, but the experience the behaviour of the staff. The food will compensate for the amount you are paying must visit place if you are in Gangtok Items, I have tried 1. Bhuteko Mutton 5/5 2.jhol Momo 5/5 3. Mutton curry 3.5/5 Let’s talk about the other things 1. Cleanliness 5/5 2. Behaviour of the staff 5/5 3. Ambience 5/5

I dined here on 25th March 2023. Positive - 1. Very good ambience. Designed in traditional village style with clay models of stoves etc. 2. Value for money. 3. Delicious and Authentic Thakali, Nepali, Sikkimese, Tibetan dishes. 4. Veg, Mushroom, Chicken, Pork, Buff, Mutton etc allll options available. 5. The menu was designed well, to contain all varieties in readable and easy-to-choose and quick-decision-making format. 6. We had Thali. It had 10 items per thali to eat. Toooo good. 7. Very humble and courteous staff. They allowed us to overstay as we couldn't finish our thali by closing time. 8. Instead of wasting the too-spicy-to-eat pizza from earlier Local Cafe, we gave it to staff at Nimtho. They obliged to ensured donate it to needy. Negative - Quite crowded with families. Perhaps this is a good thing for the restaurant.

An outlet selling local cuisine with an amazing ambience coupled with great food. We loved the ambience & the manner in which the artefacts have been displayed. Tried Bhuteko Mutton (330) for starters, which was awesome. It is essentially fried mutton. Then, we tried the Thakali Mutton thali (390) & the Sikkimese Pork Thali (390) which were great. The pork & the mutton dishes were well done. We also tried the Tongba (400), which is a local fermented millet drink served in a bamboo container. It was different. Can be recharged at least three times, as only hot water needs to be added to the container to get it going again!! Therefore, can serve at least three adults. The service was okay. The place was not crowded on a weekday. A good & must try joint, if you wish to try the local & associated cuisines.
