A stellar disappointment!
We visited Sugosugo on a Sunday evening for dinner. The restaurant offers a valet parking service and it's a good thing as street parking can be a little tricky.
The restaurant is located on the first floor and the entrance to the staircase / lift area is from the side of the building. This pathway was very dirty, with garbage bins and all. There were also puddles of what seemed like sewage water. This area also had a strong, off putting urine smell. Not a pleasant start.
The restaurant itself is done up in bright and lovely pastel shades. It's fresh on the eyes and it was neat.
We were shown our table and we placed our order. We ordered a selection of starters, pizzas, pastas, a mojito and soup.
The restaurant was only about 40% full, despite that our food took upwards of 30 mins to arrive. Food came to the table one after the other, one dish at a time.
The fries (Calling them fries was a little misleading as they were literally fried pieces of herbed dough) came with a tomato based sauce and it was very underwhelming.
We also got the fried pizza - once again, it was tiny slivers of bread with pesto sauce and tomato sauce. Satisfactory, but not great.
The chicken meatball pizza arrived and it was undercooked. The dough was still raw in places and the sauce didn't sit on the pizza properly.
Next, the pastas arrived. They were alright, but for the Indian palate, they could do with a little more salt. We got a ravioli which was quite tasty, but again, lacked salt. It was buttery and rich, so maybe that made up.
We had also placed an order for an aglio olio pasta. It didn't arrive and we had to remind the wait staff. After we did, it was brought to our table. I'm not sure if the staff forgot about it because remember I said we ordered soup? That didn't arrive too. The staff forgot 3 dishes from our order.
They were polite and apologetic about it, but we lost our appetite by then.
Sugosugo was a restaurant which was strongly recommended by plenty and I hope my poor experience was a one off. The place is pretty, the menu looks good and it has a lot of potential. I won't be visiting anytime soon after this, but I hope...
Read moreWalking in, you’re greeted by a charmingly simple American diner vibe. Bold, catchy colors and an inviting atmosphere set the stage. Arriving early as the first of my group of five, I braced for that awkward “dining-alone” lull. But the waitstaff were quick to engage me in lively conversation, ensuring I felt less like a lonely soul and more like the star of a solo talk show. Service? A well-deserved 5 stars.
Unfortunately, the menu told a different story. The excitement quickly fizzled when we realized most items were unavailable. Out of a plethora of starters, only two were actually available. Every main dish we set our hearts on? Unavailable. It was like playing a game of Italian menu roulette, and losing every time.
The ultimate letdown, though, came when we tried to order the classic tiramisu, only to be told it was “not ready.” In an authentic Italian restaurant, that felt like going to a pizzeria that ran out of dough.
But here’s the twist: whatever we did manage to order was delicious. The flavors were on point, and each dish left us wishing there was more to choose from. It’s clear the kitchen has talent.
Sugo Sugo has the charm, the ambiance, and the service down pat, but the kitchen? It’s like they RSVP’d to the party but forgot to show up. Do better, Sugo Sugo! Your diners deserve a little more sugo to...
Read moreSugosugo is a cute and authentic Italian café with a viewing section for their kitchen, so you can watch them cook. It is a bit pricey, but that's only fair when the food is such authentic Italian cuisine—and it's worth the price!
We ordered the Margherita pizza, vegetarian lasagna (Lasagna Arcobaleno), Cacio e Pepe (white sauce pasta), and La Saporita (bell pepper sauce pasta). Unfortunately, we wanted to try the ravioli too, but it wasn't available.
The highlight of the food was the Margherita pizza and the vegetarian lasagna. The veg lasagna was definitely one of the best we’ve ever had in Chennai, which is unusual because most vegetarian lasagnas we’ve tried elsewhere were either bad or mediocre at best. Here, even the vegetables were perfectly cooked. The Margherita pizza was amazing—the crust was soft and thin, and the tomato base was just perfect.
Out of the two pastas we ordered, we loved La Saporita (bell pepper sauce). It had such a unique flavor—creamy, flavorful, and absolutely a must-try here. The Cacio e Pepe, on the other hand, was a tiny bit dry and felt slightly heavy to eat.
Overall, the food was extraordinary, and the ambiance and service were even better. The staff explained every question we had about the dishes clearly and respectfully.
We will definitely visit again, just...
